1995W Five Coin Gold Eagle Set

Hello all,

I bought this set 10 years ago directly from the mint, on a whim because it was the 10 year anniversary set. Really don't know much about coins and coin collecting, truth be told. I am not interested in selling it at this time....I will probably keep it for another 10 years!

I have a few questions though...I am aware that the silver $1 eagle has increased in value to more than than what I paid for the entire set. My questions;

1. What is the entire set worth?
2. Is it worth more as a complete set or more if the set is broken up?
3. I have been looking to see if there will be a 20 year anniversay set produced by the mint but haven't seen any mention of it on the US mint website. Has any one else seen anything about it....or will they wait for a 25 year set?

Also......

This set was bought new and has hardly even seen the light of day, being locked away in a safe! I guess I don't understand the grading system. Shouldn't any set that has been struck, then set in protective plastic holders be graded at the highest level? Should I have this set graded by some sort of agency? If so, which is the best and how can I safely send this set away to someone I don't know and be assured that I will get the same set back?

Sounds like you made a really good investment.

I don't know what the set is worth, but the silver dollar is going for big bucks.

A search of eBay will give you an idea of the relative value.

Here is one listed on E-Bay at 4,500; no bids yet.
May be too high but the Silver Eagle slabbed MS69 should go for around 3,000 to 3,200 on its own.

The silver coin bids around $2,050. (CDN Dec, '03).

The quality of coins varies because they recieve different amounts of detail from the dies
and different amounts of damage before they are packaged. Most of these grade 68 or 69
but higher and lower grades are not uncommon.

Generally there is little or a negative set premium for most recent dated coinage. If there
is any sort of problem then you'd want to leave it intact. If the coin is better than typical
then it might pay to have it slabbed and/ or sell it separately. Check the current wholesale
for the set and for the combined value of the coins before making a decision. Ask a know-
ledgeable dealer about whether or not the coin is worth slabbing. They usually aren't but
to get the best price when you sell it can be most advantageous to have it slabbed.

Thanks very much for the info! Still a little afraid to just send out a coin set that could be worth alot of $$$ to be graded. Anyone have any opinions on how to do it safely?

Insure it, sent the set to PCGS, have the whole lot graded that way you do not have to remove the coins from the plastic.

Just insure it, if it's stolen/lost, there are plenty of sales on Ebay to prove the value.

My recommendation, get it slabbed.

Hi, I would keep it just as it is, Many of these sets have been broken up already, I think the set as is, is worth a premium. PCGS will grade them but most likely you will get PR69dcam's. you are much more likely to get a PR68dcam than a PR70dcam

Does anyone know if the mint is going to put out a 20 year set? If so, I will be a buyer! If not, I am sure there will be a 25 year set from west point! I am buying that!

Nothing has been announced so it seems improbable that they'd be able to get it done in time.

There's a lot going on this year at the mint.
