Beach man charged with defrauding eBay buyers
He sold nonexistent gold coins, FBI says
BY TIM McGLONE THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT

NORFOLK — A Virginia Beach man has been charged with defrauding customers on eBay by offering rare gold coins that he never actually had, according to the FBI.
Kenneth W. Curry II, 47, was arrested Thursday on a complaint in federal court. He was jailed on $50,000 bail pending a preliminary hearing Tuesday.
Twenty people lost about $129,000 after winning eBay auctions and sending money to Curry, either directly by check or through the online billing service PayPal,
Kenneth W. Curry II, 47, was jailed on $50,000 bail.
according to the complaint.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has moved to seize Curry’s $420,000 home at 804 Casa Verde Way in the Atwoodtown neighborhood near Back Bay.
Curry, using the eBay identification kwciicoins, offered for sale hundreds of American Eagle $50 gold coins between July and November.
One man in Wilmington, N.C., won an auction for 96 of the coins for about $329 each. The man mailed a check for $31,597.77 to Curry’s home but received only 25 coins in return, according to the complaint.
A man in Arizona bought 73 coins for $27,578.44 but received only three gold coins and 15 Canadian gold coins, the court papers say. Most of the others never received coins.
It was unclear specifically where the money went, but agents learned that Curry recently had been purchasing stock using E*Trade, and he also bought a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, which the government also is seeking to seize.
The government began minting American Eagle 22 karat gold coins in 1986, using an early 20th century design.
Similar gold coins were being offered for sale on eBay on Friday for $430 to $975 apiece.

It amazes me what some people will buy/pay to a person they have never met, never heard of, and never bought from before. How stupid do you have to be?

Wilmington, N.C. is close enough that for $31,000 I would make the trip and pick the coins up in person.
