Received: 1899 PCGS MS-63 DMPL (Cameo) Morgan Dollar -- Updated Photos

I just purchased this 1899 PCGS MS-63 DMPL (Cameo) Morgan Dollar today, and have not yet received it.

However, I wanted to share the original listing photos with you and am interested in your opinion of what I feel is a really pretty Cameo DMPL Morgan Dollar.

It really has a bold look to it. Lady Liberty's cheeks are real clean for a 63.

Very pretty coin. I can't accept the grade based on the photo, the coin looks better. Maybe the frost is a tad weak on the check?

Jack: The following is the coin description provided by the numismatist who catalogued this coin.

"1899 PCGS MS63 DMPL brilliant with stunning mirrors. Small planchet defect obverse field. Otherwise looks MS65!"

It's a repeat purchase by me from a dealer who has always provided me with excellent quality coins at a fair price. I think that the brown smudge area is what he is referring to as the planchet flaw. It appears to perhaps be some type of minor grease spot, or at least an area where some foreign substance may have been on the planchet or die during the minting process.

Based on the photo and the description I feel that it's got the eye appeal "pop" of a high end MS-64 DMPL Cameo, and am acquiring this MS-63 DMPL as an "upgrade" to my standard MS-64.

Mark, Oak, Wayne, Jack , HadleyDog & Josh: Thanks for your posts and your compliments on my new 1899 Morgan. From the photos, the coin appears to have really great eye appeal "pop".

I really like the cameo contrast with the DMPL mirrors.

Stuart- That's a nice coin. If you doubt it's a true PQ 64DMPL, take a look at the Hertiage "post sale bargins" where there's a 1899-O in PCGS 64DMPL around $265. Of course if you are consumed by buyer's remorse, well YOU HAVE MY ADDRESS!!!!

Just a quick update after receiving this beautiful 1899 PCGS MS-63 DMPL Morgan Dollar. -- WOW!!! She's a beauty!!!

This coin has the look of an MS-65 DMPL (Cameo) and it's in an MS-63 DMPL (New) PCGS Holder...Go Figure... It's got the look of a cameo Carson City Morgan, with strongly contrasting mirrored fields and frosty devices which is very unusual for an 1899 P-mint Morgan.

I will try to take some digital pictures of her this weekend to share with my fellow forum members. The coin in hand looks significantly better than the following original sales listing photo.

Stuart, those images look really over processed. Can you show us some images with no editing other than cropping and sizing?

One hint if you are going to do some editing, take the shots in the highest resolution setting your camera allows. The images won't appear to be over processed that way.

Edited to add: Also shoot in the highest quality. From the review on your camera, that would be setting the camera to store images in the TIFF format, which is lossless.

CoinJP: Thanks for the compliment on my new 1899 Morgan.

Eric: Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is that if I take the images at 5MP, then I've got a very large file that I'll have to compress even more than I am already.

By the way, thanks very much for your naming convention and file size suggestions (and Ken's) regarding adding photos to my PCGS Registry Set. I have now successfully added some photo to my Morgan PL/DMPL Registry Set, so with your assistance I have now "deciphered the code".

Here are a couple of images that I took earlier this weekend, wne I mentioned I was experimenting with the harsh halogen lighting, but I am not overly pleased with them.

Stuart, the compression isn't a problem when you are working with a TIFF file. You will get much better quality images by shooting in the TIFF mode, edit the TIFF in your image editor, and then saving the image as a JPEG with compression.

Here's an example Stuart. I shot this image in TIFF format. Out of the camera the image was 24mb. I cropped and sized it down to 1000x1000, and when saved as a JPEG at 16:1 compression the resulting image was 200k, which is great for an image of this size.
