Walkers, General Buying tips

Hello All,

I made the decision the other night to start collecting raw Walkers. I know this set will take me a long while to collect but I really like this coin out of all of them.

I'm going to be going for coins that go for less than $100. I realize that in some years that this won't get my foot in the door but I'll save those key date ones until later. I'm working on another set right now and that's all the piggy bank can give up a month now.

I had a look around Ebay...wow...seems you either have very low end coins or certified high end coins...not much choice in between. I'm a bit concerned with what I deemed a lot of whizzed coins as well. Then of course you have a lot of sellers with poor/no pictures/no returns etc. Seems to me that there are a lot of sharks selling walkers with very few genuine sellers...remarks?

Anybody have preferred Walker sellers that provide known good coins and not out to scam that they would like to share?

Any current scams/scammers going on in this series that I should know about?

  • I would want to see the raw Walker in hand before I bought it. Why not save up your money and go to a show? Then you can see many raw Walkers.

If buying from eBay I recommend buying slabbed coins only from people who offer a return policy. Many Walkers of the 40s are available in PCGS and NGC slabs for under $100 each...
  • Sniper,

consider starting your collection with what is often called the "short set"
of walkers. These are the dates 1940 to 1947. Lots of beautiful specimens
can be had for less than $100. If you focus on slabbed coins (I would stick
with PCGS, NGC and ANACS) most of the set can be had for less than $100
per coin in MS-64. You may have to save up for the 41-S.

I too love walkers. I feel they are the best design in circulated US coinage.

    I recently purchased this coin:

  • I did a circ Walker set, with the short set in various MS grades. When bidding on ebay, I always looked for ANACS coins first...easier to crack out for the albums

I recently bought a couple of Walkers in 66 and they were quite reasonable. You could probably build a very nice set in 64 and 65 in the top 3 slabs without too much risk. Any raw coin on eBay valued over $50 has "Danger" written all over it. Not to say that you can't find nice raw examples, but I would stick to sight seen coins and avoid the heartache of return policies, returns and all the aggravation that goes with raw eBay coins.

Now I will also say that if you know sellers you can trust that changes things. eBay is such a wild west show that unless you have experience with the seller you are just buying trouble with raw coins. Just MHO.

  • I love the look of a perfect XF Walker with a pleasing contrast of medium gray
toning that is darker in the crevices to highlight the details of the design - Yum!

I also usually prefer evenly matched sets and would try to keep all coins in the
set in the same range, be it F/VF, VF/XF, XF/AU, etc.

In these grades, the fun would be in the challenge of locating great coins for the
grade you're seeking. Be very selective, and don't just fill the holes. If you go to
a show with one or two months of your budget, you may come back with upwards
of 20 coins from the late dates, a few early or slightly better dates, or just one nice
better date coin. The key dates may cost many months budget, or you can opt for
a slightly lesser grade that still matches the set fairly well.

It's also a challenge to find fairly graded and priced coins, as there are so many
"optimistically" graded raw coins out there.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck! It's a beautiful coin and makes a fun set! image
