Nice coin. not really my toning style preference. Post some pics from the new camera, maybe I'll like it more with better pics.

Mark: I understand your observation about the toning style.

I thought that this was a good no-risk pick-up to get a 2-sided toner for CDN pricing at $51 delivered image

ER & MorganHunter2: The 1888 image posted earlier in this thread was the original auction image, as I have not yet even received the coin in person. I just purchased it on E-Bay yesterday afternoon.

Here's the update on the status of my new camera which I posted this morning on that thread... Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 Thread

Although I have not yet been able to post any examples of the photos, I did take some test photos prior to purchasing the camera, and the macro capability was truly awesome. I was able to handhold the camera in macro mode, usint both auto-focus and image stabilization under sub-average lighting conditions (in the camera store on a cloudy day) and was able to fill the frame with the slabbed coins (great close-up 5 centimeter macro) and achieved high quality photos on program mode, prior to even learning how to select optimal camera settings.

Please be patient with me, but these photos will be worth the wait. This is an awesome camera with lots of advanced features... image

MorganHunter2: Thanks for the offer. We have several forum members who take very professional digital images of coins as either a standalone service or as a bundled service that is part of their consignment coin selling.

Airplanenut (Jeremy Zimmerman), FC57Coin (Frank), Russ and several others will be very pleased to discuss this with you. For me, photography has bene a life-long love, and a way for me to demonstrate some creativity through photographic composition.

I am pleased to be able to take about 35 years of photography experience, and combine it with my love of coins to display some of the beauty of the high eye-appeal coins which I enjoy collecting. However, for me it can become very time consuming, and this is only an evening & weekend hobby for me.

Digital photography unfortunately requires a lot more than just photography skills, and can get very frustrating for many (I know the feeling). I have been using my wife's Olympus digital camera for all of the coin photos which I have previously posted on the forum, and will now take the time and make the effort to transition to my new camera. I will have to slog through the process and will eventually be able to make some posts...

At one venture in my young life I shot still while in chicago- and with a Hasse and my love- Minolata XK- I was IMO- very good- but when some young enterprising drug addicted crook broke into my house and stole 20K in equipment- I lost that interest. I had 6 pics published back in the 70's by Time and SI. It wasn't until the last 3 years that I started to get back into photography and the digitals- they are tough. The Fuji FinePix works great for my job now- the 128mb card makes it easy to shoot a hundred pics. download is a breeze- but they are work pics- have tried to do coins and that is where I draw a problem, can't get them to reduce to fit here- looks are great when at 200kb or more.

I might need to take a week off of work and get my mind strictly into this camera.

MorganHunter2: Sorry to hear about your Hassleblad and other equipment theft.

Another potential solution would be to web host your larger file size images. You should be able to do that either through your internet provider or via Yahoo!.

Others on this forum more experienced than me in web hosting may wish to advise you with more information on this option. I agree with you that the 50 KByte file size limitation stifles creativity and reduces the resolution of the photos to diminish the visual impact of the images.

Bajjerfan: I agree with you that the toning on your 1897 Morgan and my new 1888 Morgan are very similar.

    Thanks for posting it!!

As an update to this thread, today I received the following coin, and I'm pleased with it. The toning is a bit more vibrant in person than depicted on the following photos. The purple & blue rim color band on the obverse extends from 12:00 to 6:00 and is a bit brighter than on the photo.

The reverse also has more luster and more vivid colors than shown on the photo. I'll try to image it after the Holidays.

I need a digital camera with a macro function and need to keep the price under $300.00 or so. Any ideas? My scanner glass is dirty on the inside and I don’t have any idea how to clean it. Look what it does to this coin. This coin is at least MS-60-something.

CoinOnTheCob: Here's a post that I recently made on another digital camera thread that you can find by doing a search in the US Coin Forum on the keyword "Digital". Hope that this info helps!

These threads should be good starting points for your search.

I just purchased the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 with 12x Optical Leica Zoom Lens, Optical Image Stabilization, and great macro capability. I love it so far!!
