When you post a coin picture on this forum, you WILL get comments

Compliments or critiques, you WILL get them. This is in reference to the original Coppercoins' thread of the 1895 proof Morgan. He took the photo of the coin, posted here to "share", expecting I 'm sure Oohs! and Aahs!, or image or image, or whatever. But people started to analyze the photo and commented that maybe it is a 1895-S with a removed mint mark. Nowhere did I see a personal attack on Coppercoins or any insinnuation that he was a crook / scammer / fraud. I 'm very sorry if you feel that way, Coppercoins.
Just don 't threaten to leave the forum again, will you?image

I can see where the replys could have been taken as an attack even as thay were not ment that way. But I second your sentiments that Chuck not leave, he is and has been a help to this hobby.

I got angry not so long ago about a coin I posted so I know where CD is coming from but it's not his coin so I am kind of surprised he is so upset. I must admit the pictures are very nice and that is evident by the clarity that was used to get close up pics. I started a thread in jest but only in jest. mike image

My pictures stink, everyone tells me so, and I still come back for more.

When I made my post (about the 7th), there were no bad comments. Everyone had said it was a circulated Proof (PR53-55). I thought the fellow was pulling our leg, mentioned the poor stiking (non proof) detail, and asked if it was certified? I assumed he was trying to educate non- Morgan people, and it never dawned on me to waste time looking for a mintmark removal. I'm sorry he wasn't posing a brain teaser and got his feeling hurt as it was actually an educational thread.

I wasn't bothered by what was said as much as the delivery. I really don't care about the coin itself...it's not my problem. I'm not here to defend coins I know nothing about. I will vemiently defend my name and reputation as an honest person. I don't counterfeit, alter, or fake anything regarding coins, and I don't appreciate suggestions to the contrary, even if hidden by sentences that "could" be read as innocent education.

I posted a photo I took of a difficult to photo coin. Done. Finished. I don't know or care what it is, all I know is that it was medium gray and had no luster...some of the most difficult coins to photo because of contrast issues. I figured some people might enjoy seeing it, and have received a number of PMs from just such people thanking me for posting the photo, even though that's not why I posted the photo to begin with.

The entire attack on the coin could have been carried out in a much less abrasive manner than to start a different thread showing how someone can tweak a photo to oblivion to force a mintmark to appear, acting as if I don't have a clue about photography, the software used for such photos, or otherwise. The words used in a number of posts were arranged in such a way as to hint at the possibility that I might be less than honest about my approach with the photo, reason for posting the photo, or intent with said coin. I can assure you that I don't have and wouldn't have such a coin in my inventory. I personally don't like Morgan dollars but have nothing against those who do like and study them.

Early on I deleted the photo from my server so as to remove it from the thread. I don't like people using my own photography to attack me, so I made it unavailable. I was asked to place it back ont he server, so I did...in the exact same form it had been in earlier. I also posted a close-up crop of the original photograph pixel for pixel. On both occasions I was again subtly attacked for altering the photos to hide evidence. I assure you I did not alter the original photo after I originally posted it, and furthermore assure that the second photo I posted of the same coin was the raw photo cropped for size. Not one pixel was altered in any other way. The "mintmark" disappeared, because the attacker doesn't understand digital editing well enough to know that ghost remnants of stains, lighting, or other changes in a flat surface the camera creates can be exaggerated many fold by simply resizing and sharpening the original photo...and that's what happened in the internet version of the photo I originally posted, deleted, then reuploaded.

It all might have been well intended on the part of said attacker, but it was carried out without tact and in a forceful approach that warranted defense of how I take photos, what I saw on the coin, etc. Believe me...if I had any inkling this much crap would have stirred because of one single photo, I never would have posted it.

Since I cannot foresee which photos will receive attacks and which ones won't, I am reluctant to post any photos here without disclaiming that I don't own the coins in subject, I don't know about them, and I don't vouch for their authenticity...but at the same time, I'm not asking for opinions either. They aren't my coins, so I don't care. If someone wants to say something about the quality of the photo, by all means do. Everyone can use constructive criticism to improve their product.

Back to ER's post that starts this thread...I really wasn't looking for anything when I posted that picture. I was only trying to innocently share a photo I took so people could enjoy it quietly, post in return, thank me, not thank me, say something about the photo quality, whatever. I don't look for nor need special acceptance, pats on the back, etc. The only reason this escalated is because I saw an attack on me as well as on a coin I don't even own nor care about. Enough said.

And by the way, I DO know the grading company that graded the coin, but do not care to add anything more to the information I already posted about the coin. It's not that I'm stupid enough not to know, and never directly said I didn't know. Attacks are enough, and sometimes people are smart enough to keep information to themselves after trying to do something nice and having to spend the day countering attacks for such actions. I do not intend on publically announcing who slabbed that coin because it is not PCGS and that seems to be the only company that can do anything right by a number of people here. Anything other than PCGS is nothing to many, and I don't care to feed that. Thank you.

I'll be moving along now, I do have work to finish before bed.
