I'm starting a "fun" collection

I read an article in an old QDB book the other night, and it inspired me to start a "fun" collection of major design types (in addition to the serious collection I am working on). I am not going to spend a lot of money on each coin and I am not going to spend tons and tons of research time on the items that I intend to buy. Of course, I will check the general prices of the coins I am interested in buying, but I won't get too caught up with buying the "best" of everything. In fact, I just bought a very cool looking Mercury dime (NGC) from DLRC for about $17. I liked how it looked, and for this collection, that is good enough for me. Anyway, thought I would share this.

I've got one of those "fun" collections too. Civil War Tokens and fractional currency.

It's a great idea. Experts (dealers and collectors) have given me similar advice in the past. My current "fun" set is circulated buffalo nickels, a set I am working on with my kindergarten-age son. In fact, he does not yet know, but one of his holiday gifts will be a 37-D 3 legs. (I am not sure who is more excited about it...my son or I).

I did the same with circ Liberty nickels. Tried to do VF or better except for the 3 key dates. Suprisingly difficult to find them in that condition. I finished the set, but still want to upgrade a couple of the Fines as I find them.

my fun collection for the moment is buying cheap but interesting coins for photography. I have a raw toned morgan in the mail at the moment, we'll see how it looks.

My fun set is Hard Times Tokens. Really neat historically and most are not that expensive.

My fun collection is Darkside. The neverending selection of amazing coins at terrific prices is very fun. Proofs, patterns, you name it, all at fraction of U.S. prices.

RYK, better make sure to view that old "Silver Spoons" episode involving a 3-legger, and Ricky's deception practiced upon ol' Dad... a cautionary tale for our times!

My fun set is colorful Lincolns which I try to buy raw or if I have to graded and put in a libary of coins book with the plastic slides. I have an Indian book that has a few in it also. I also have the two Wayte Raymond large cent books that I'm putting together a collection of large cents in G-vf/xf. Nothing to expensive but really neat to look at none the less.
