Anyways, as far as the one you mentioned, that card is as fake as a $3 bill. If it were real, first and foremost, it would have a missing print mark in the blue background near the left border, roughly even with the brim of Mantle's cap. I'm suprised the picture wasn't doctored to show the missing blue ink, or the card itself defaced in that area, as I have seen many of this particular counterfeit variation that have been altered to add the missing pixel. It's a very good counterfeit through, other than that, and has fooled many novice collectors. That particular counterfeit has a variation of it's own... I think who ever made it realized they screwed up the color of the blue background the first time around, as many appear with a pale shade of green rather than blue, and a new batch of the same card was created with a better looking blue that made it more convincing. The back is also way too bright, likely the result of modern ink and cardstock. I've never actually handled one of these new counterfeits yet, but I'm certain they fluoresce brightly, which a real 52 does not, and I'd also bet that they are not completely opaque, as a real one is. I doubt if the counterfeiter took the time and made the card in stages to try to copy the print patterns of the original, I've yet to see one of that quality, so this card would likely appear printed entirely in half-tone (tiny dots) which would be a simple giveaway of its worthlessness.
The seller Parklanespirit sounds familiar but can't put my finger on it. I have put this card up against a real nice copy:
I posted this to see if we can get a discussion going. I'm not good from a scan with respect to authentic Mantles...so let's see what others may say. This is the same ole tired "come-on" - someone having to sell this....blah, blah, blah...at least it wasn't found under grampa's ass before he died!

If you deal with a seller like this on a 52 Mantle ungraded OR graded, you are looking for big trouble.
If you deal with a reputable seller on an ungraded 52 Mantle - you are taking a big chance on buying either a real good fake or a trimmed/altered card.
Do whatever you want, but the only smart way to buy a 52 Mantle is as a PSA graded (or other major reputable grading company) card from a very reputable dealer.
as for the scam auction, what the hell card is this corner from?
The 52 Mantle is classified as a double print, but really, it's not a true double print (meaning the card would be on the printing sheet twice), it's a double print because they printed two variations of the card and basically replaced one with the other, so the supply is the same as any other regular printed card from the high series. They did this with a couple other cards from 1952 as well, one was Jackie Robinson, the other Bobby Thompson.

Broadway Boogie Woogie, Piet Mondrian 1942-43.
-- Big blaring letters of different colors. (Targeting eBay newbies rather than serious collectors)
-- Low literacy level. (Common trait among shady eBay sellers)
-- Low feedback with a bad rating.
-- Refers to Beckett when citing the value of a '52 Mantle. (Doesn't know much about vintage cards)
-- $125 mandatory shipping. (He knows it won't sell for anywhere near market value, in fact may only get one sucker to make the min. bid, so he's trying to max his take)
-- Could sell it for 10x more if he had PSA grade it, but didn't. (Knows PSA would reject it, maybe they already did)
-- Contradicts one of the basic tenets of card buying online: You will never never NEVER get a '52 Mantle (that would pass PSA scrutiny) at a bargain-basement sale price on eBay.
Now, perhaps this seller is not a criminal at heart, maybe he's a newbie who was ripped off on this card and had PSA reject it as fake. If so, he should live and learn, not try to victimize somebody else.
So what we now know from your scan is:
1. He has the card
2. The newspaper is real
3. The card? I think it's a dud.

edit: 4. Paper is from Cleveland

Yeah. It's such a fishy auction, it will go for dirt cheap. So far only shills are bidding, it appears. Buy the card, send it to PSA, then show us the result along with the submission number to verify. I'd really REALLY love one of these countless shady Mantle sales to be the real thing.
By the way, forgive some of us for suspecting it's the same few guys (or is it just one?) coming back and practicing their lines on us. We don't like being roped into being tutors for scammers. A very cynical crowd some of us have become.
Thank you for your advice if you have any local reccomendations please let me know I will pay a $100 finders fee tou you I rarely deal in sportscards and I constantly get called about my opinion on rare cards even though this is not my expertise. I attend all the major shows and auctions and I have yet to meet a "expert" in my area with cards I have sent this scan to several of my dealer freinds with mixed opinions. I have dealt with this seller before and he seems above board I thought I might be able to "steal" it but it appears to be getting some action I have decided because of the mixed feedback to pass on this card unless I get a qualified expert in this area but with all of the auctions coming up and this hectic time of the year I know it will be tough to get someone to see the card so when in doubt I will probably pass or watch the auction and see if the smart money is bidding and then come in late.
Looks like that Mantle is getting more action; even 1 guy with 99% feedback and over 300 rating. However, he was quickly outdone by another bidder, one who signed up just yesterday. Amazing how that now that the pressure is on, ABC took to coming off like he is from outer space. Was that another attempt to legitimize the auction? Ridiculous. The shame of it all is someone is going to end up on the growing list of ripped off 52 Mantle buyers.
Notice how the close-ups of the corners have now disappeared from the auction. My guess the seller has been reading this board.
Run away from this one.
Matt
lol yeah stay away from it
