What do you consider as semi-key Morgans?

We all know what the key dates are. I'm still missing the 94-P and 93-S. I don't even count the 95-P.

If you were going to bet on which ones would be the future keys to the set, which ones would you pick?

Two that come to mind for me are the 93-O and 95-O. Whick other ones would you guess?

Right now there seem to be plenty of 89-cc and 93-s coins to pick from. For the future I would think that the 1895-s 1896-s 1903-s and the 1904-s in ms63 or better and the 1879-cc and 1893-cc coins in au53-58 mite be fairly tough. Most of the issues are readily available tho those that are condition rarities in one form or another should remain so.

To separate apples from oranges, some dates can be found if you are not discriminating, but to find a nice way is another story. The 1896-s is a great example. They can be found, but to find a nice example with eye appeal is a challenge. Most are heavily bag-marked, and many have ugly toning. A nice example in 63 is tough, in 64 is tougher, and in 65 probably out of reach for most of us. Look through the Heritage archives and you'll see lots of unattractive examples.

    Don't forget the `92-s.

The difference between a key and semi-key depends on the grade of your set. In AU-58 the semi-keys are 84-S, 86-O, 87-8-9"S", all between 1892-1896, '01-'04 'S", '03-O, Many "CC's" practically don't exist in AU. For uncirculated, just look at the old list of rarity by grade in the VAM Encyclopedia. The most obscure semi-key in MS-64 is the 1897-O IMHO.

The key dates are key because they are scarce in ALL grades, the 89-cc being somewhat easier to find than the 93-s. Others like the 84-s 92-s and 97-o are relatively common in circulated condition. Both of the 96-s coins in pcgs 63 that I have/had in my hands [one went to a board member] were pretty decent, die polish lines being the biggest distraction. Even in this up market the 96-s 03-s and 04-s are kinda skimpy selection-wise.
