PayPal with insured USPS 1st Class shipping - why I love PayPal

I printed my first USPS 1st class INSURED label today using PayPal.

Man, I'm going to miss standing in line at the post office to send an insured coin (at least for under $200).

    I Like it.
Just ran a test on a coin I'm waiting on payment on..
Four oz. package or large envelope $1.06
    Delivery confirmation $.13
    Proccessing fee $.20
    Insurance under $50 cost $1.30
    Total $2.69
Thats less than taking it to the post office I think. And this way you have a tracking number for a package that's valued less than $50.00 something you don't have, with just the stamp at the post office.

The postage and insurance are the same rates at the post office.

The only surchange is 20c for generating the label, and you must buy delivery confirmation (for 13c - vs. 45c at the post office)

So you actually save 12c - it's good stuff!

You don't need to pay any surcharge. Check out the USPS site for click'n'ship.

    one question

When you do all of this and have a maximum of $200 insured value then all you have to do is print the label, put the label on the package (I assume you pay for it with Paypal) and then have your usual carrier pick it up at your home/business or drop it in a mail slot right?

    Yes It's that simple.

One note for those that have not used this. Your package or envelope must be at least 3/4 inch thick for it to have or use delivery confirmation. A layer of small bubble warp around your coin works great.

    last question (for now)

If I use a inkjet/laser printer (no label printer) how will the shipping label be attached to the package? tape (could come off)? suggestions?

I see that PCGS is using the preprinted mailing labels now too! I know the flat pack with jist a couple slabs in it haint nowheres near 3/4 inch thick. The postal peeple here look really befuddled when they see del conf on registered mail. It just blows their mind till I splain it to them.

    JB,

I always just print on a sheet of paper--cut out the lable, and use scotch tape on all four sides... never a problem.

Slight correction on that 3/4 inch thing.
it does not have to be 3/4 inch.
However, and i think K6AZ pointed this out,if it isnt, its priority mail and is postage due on the other end !

Most people use self adhesive labels, but I think they are too expensive. I print my labels out on standard plain paper, and attach them using Avery glue sticks.

If you use bubble mailers, just buy some 1/2-3/4 inch large bubble wrap and stick a small piece in the mailer with the coin. The requirement is that some part of the package must be 3/4" thick, not the entire package.

Two inch wide clear tape accross the whole label works for me. Three stripes and the label is water proof and the readers work fine.

Except the regulations say you can not tape over the barcode. Try the glue stick, it is easy and as fast as tape, and the label is on there permanantely once the glue dries, which takes about two minutes.

I use Avery Full Sheet Labels (#8165) or the same thing from the Staples brand.

Have you looked to see how much those cost per sheet? Seriously, try plain paper with the glue stick, once you do you'll wonder why you ever spent so much for labels.

www.labeluniverse.com has half sheets at a good price but the shipping is high due to the weight - the paper and glue stick is cheaper but us lazy types use the self-adhesive half-sheets image

I tape over the bar code everytime and never have had a problem. 2 in. tape cover the whole label and like said above its waterproof.

This is the regulation, but I stopped at the PO and asked about it.

I got the nice guy (who knows, you may get a different reaction from someone else), and HE put a piece
of clear tape over the barcode, and then tried to scan it. "Works great," he quipped, so I will start doing it.
I feel better knowing the label won't get damaged in transit.

Yeah, and then you go to a post office like I go to where they stick the rules to you and refuse to accept your package because it does not conform to the rules.

Eric, you could try depositing it in a mailbox. Would they return it you think (due to the tape)?

I looked at the USPS ClicknShip site and it says it's for Prio Mail and Express Mail only. Am I missing something? How do you access it for First Class?
Do those labels fit on a #000 bubble mailer?
    Thanks.

I use the USPS shipping assistant. I just don't trust dropping insured packages in the mailbox without an actual postmark. You can do all types with the shipping assistant - media mail, first class, and priority. For registered mail, you use the base rate for how it is going, first class or priority.

Well, first let me say I'm not promoting this auction, I do not know the seller nor did I ever purchase from them.....

I won a similiar auction for these types of labels. I recieved 3200 labels, that's 1600 sheets(2 labels per sheet). I paid $10 delivered. I have no idea how these sellers do it, but I'm sure they enter your name and addy some where to mail these things to you and they are just the middle man(or woman). What a deal. Your label is printed right on the sticker. The other half is wasted but that's where the reciept of your transaction through Paypal or USPS click and ship is printed. It was a huge savings from the office supply stores or buying name brand items. They can easily be trimed down to fit a smaller envelope.
Once printed and when the info is in the electronic world you can go to the USPS web site and track the delivery with a couple of clicks. You enter the tracking number with a little note on what was shipped and they(USPS) will send you an email when delivered.
To me it was a bargain. I have enough label to deliver 1600 packages for $10 right to my door.

Again, let me say I'm not promoting this auction, I do not know the seller nor did I ever purchase from them..This auction was only used as an example...............

Trooper, you don't have to waste half those labels. Use the shipping assistant I posted above, and select print receipt on separate page.

On this Click and Ship. Can you leave the parcel on your porch for the PO to pick up, or must you be there to hand it over??

    Eric,
The shipping assistant allows you to do the extra 12 cents for an under one ounce bubble mailer?

From the USPS 800# lady told me. If it's less than one pound and can fit in the mail box, throw it in. If the item won't fit or is over one pound, you can ask the mail delivery person to take it. But they don't have to. Since my mail guy parks about 4 house down and is friendly, he has never turned a package away. I always walk it over to him.
For pickup, if you call them on the phone, it's $12. If you do it over the internet it's free. I don't know if you can leave the package on the door step or not, I also don't know who picks it up. The reguler delivery guy or someone else.

If you have any questions and to confirm what I just said you might want to call the 800 munbers listed on the USPS web site under contact info.

They will catch that at the post office. You print the label, put it on the mailer, and the PO will calculate the charge. To use delivery confirmation with a bubble mailer though, it must be at least 3/4" thick in some spot.

So you're still making a trip to the post office to pay the postage?

I thought the purpose of this was to print your own postage on the label to avoid the trip...

For insured items, yes. You can print and send insured up to $200, but anything over that (or packages over one pound) you have to go to the PO anyway. Just find one of the smaller branch POs. I have a couple I go to, and am always in and out in less than ten minutes.

I was told my my USPS clerk that you don't have to hand deliver a package over 1 pound if you use the USPS generated labels (from either PayPal or Click-n-ship) and can just drop it in the mail.

The 1 pound limit is a Unibomber deterrent, but the barcode labels are trackable so they are exempt.
