I could see it as a high end MS63 due mainly to the three bag marks on the reverse (one between the "PL," one on the "R," and the big one across the eagle), plus the small amount of chatter on the obverse.

OK, you have estimates from AU58 to MS65, and everything in between except MS60.

What is the grade on the holder?

Just kidding, I'm making fun of someone I talked with recently and I really shouldn't kid like that....

I'd say 64 because I'm guessing it has nice luster and a nice original surface.

Wow... the luster and surfaces must be incredible for them to forgive (or forget) that gash on the reverse!

Dragon, what is your opinion of the grade assigned?

Edited to add... the smaller picture does enhance the look, but still.....

It has been my opinion that eventually all slabbed coins will be overgraded.

Unfortunately, a new "market standard" is evolving that will make the overgrades the "accepted" grades.

Howard: In my opinion the coin appears to be overgraded. There's a very significant commercial impact since this coin is an $800 coin in MS-65 and quadruples to over $3000 in MS-66. So, there's a tempting financial motivation for the owner to resubmit the MS-65 several times to perhaps eventually upgrade to MS-66.

I do personally find it difficult to rationalize how that specific coin (with deep & prominent reverse scratch from eagles neck extending to left) could justifyably qualify for the MS-66 grade

Was it submitted by an individual collector or by a high volume dealer?

With that scratch accross the eagle, I thought I would be generous with a MS 62.

Apparently, contact marks are not the only determinant of grade... strike, luster, and overall eye appeal of the coin "in hand" count too.

Is it my imagination or is the reverse weakly struck? With the exception of the gash on the reverse, the small pics look very nice. BTW, I doubt it would grade so high if the gash were on the obverse!

Why would anyone doubt PCGS's grading? That's a strong 66 IMHO!

i still stand by ms-65, so i think it's overgraded by 1 point.

ms-65 or 66 does NOT mean "perfect". i would expect to see marks on a ms-65, generally confined to the rev. but i agree that the marks appear a bit strong for 66.

I would have no interest in that coin at the MS65 price. Even if properly graded, it's a problem coin.
