# of people grading a coin

David,

I'm sure this has been answered before but I'm curious. Let's take, for example, my 1947-D Walker in MS-67, a pop 7/0 coin. I own the last of these seven coins to be "made" a 67. How many graders/finalizers, etc., would be involved in grading a conditionally rare coin such as mine?? Who makes the final decision as to the grade if there is some kind of disagreement as to whether it is a 66 or 7, etc.?

Thanx for taking the time weekly to answer our questions!!

Steve

    Hi Steve,

It has been asked and answered many times...but it bears repeating.

The basic concept is that two graders have to agree. So grader #1 enters his grade in the computer. Then grader number two does the same thing. If they agree the grade is finalized. If they disagree a third grade "breaks the tie." If all three graders have a different grade, then there are averaging rules. That's the basic concept.

After the coin is holdered, another grader verifies the grade. If he disagrees, it is shown to still another grader. The process goes on...the system is designed so that two graders neeed to agree on a final grade before a coin goes out the door.

We have found that this consensus methos yields the most accurate grades.

    Thanks,

    David
