Just my 2 sen worth.
the new arrival from Tasmania:

KM#16.1, Meiji 7 (1874) 2 sen bronze with square dragon scales, 14g, 31.5mm, combined 1873-74 mintage slightly under 4-million. I grade it VF+, probably cleaned at some time. (The picture makes the rim ding on the obverse look worse than it is and understates the quality of the strike.)

<< <i> Don't all the 1874's have square scales? I think 1877 was the transitional issue in which you can find both square and V scales in one year. >>
Of course you are correct on both points.
I'm working on the 11-piece 2 sen date set, which includes both 1877 versions, but not the fabled 1925, which was never released for circulation. I still need a square scale 1873 and a V scale 1883. So far the best examples I've seen of either one wouldn't have gotten a VG from ACG!
At first I preferred the v-scale design but know I find the square scales more to my liking.
I'll be back in the states for a visit soon so I will make up my list then.
I too have noticed that there are a lot of beat up 2 sen around. Good ones are hard to find. In fact, I have never really seen anything more than say a VF/VF+.
