What is the SGS grading service?

I have seen the slabs but don't know who they are.

I can think of many pejorative phrases for the acronym SGS that might fit some people's perceptions of this pseudo-service.

I saw one MS-67 on eBay, but it looked circulated.

Aw shucks, that means my MS-68 isn't the lowest graded one anymore. They also have some slabs that have circulated coins in them but they are not graded.

What is the SGS grading service?
