I used to think that sellers who put that type of thing in an auction when it's obviously not true were trying to scam buyers. I've since come to realize that many simply don't know what the terms cameo and deep cameo mean. They think cameo is "shiney" and deep cameo "very shiney."

I for one still do not know the difference other than from a few pics Ive seen..

Is there an easy way or relatively easy way to make a possible determination
from an image or the actual coin what could be considered

cameo
versus
deep cameo?

Cameo is the contrast between the devices (raised portions) and the fields (flat portions). Think of a woman's cameo broach, which is where the term originates. Proofs generally all have "shiney" fields and, prior to the mid-1970's, most also had "shiney" devices. In other words, no contrast. If there is little or no contrast, the coin would be a "brilliant" proof.

If it has contrast similar to this it would be a "cameo":

There is a wide variance in degree of contrast within each designation, so not all cameos are created equal and not all deep cameos are created equal.

Aah okies..
I see it based on those images very easily..
and Im guessing that it is eve a bit better seen with the coin right in front of you and would be more striking or lacking..
and understanding there are varying degrees to those but I see the concept
better now... thanks...

How in the heck do you get the photos of c/dc's so clear? I have been trying with 2 of mine and I can't get a clean shot without crap in the reflection.

It doesn't say that these are silver Kennedys. I looked at that lisitng before it was posted here. It probably has all circulated moderns, possibly from a slot machine payoff. Don't do it.

You are right sliderider, no where does he post that there is any silver in the ones in the pic. Looks like 1 or two, at least, may be, but even given that, it closed at $48 plus shipping....too much for $35 worth of circ change.

I have about $200 worth of halves like that that I should do the same with. And do like he did with the Ikes

I have not seen the seller misrep any part of either auction but I was still amazed at the prices that he got. Maybe when he said 90% deep cameo people took the 90% to mean silver content? hmmmmm
