My last name is Hess after all. From the Hesse portion of Germany.
I figure I am just bringing my baby home.

How do you grade something like this?

I'd give it a VF (or so). The crown would be the basic grading point but general wear, sharpness of the edges, lettering, etc, counts too.

Nice piece. I used to have one almost identical.
Hessians weren't too popular around here about 225 years ago.
...but one of their coins would be a welcome detector find! It happens, occasionally. I've dug no German States pieces but know one fella who claims to have found a thaler.
