Back from the ANA in Pittsburgh

Left home at 7:30ish and arrived in Pittsburgh at 11:30. We got 'confused' once we hit downtown and made a wrong turn.
The bourse was typical of all the ANA shows and FUN. First stop was at Josh Moran's table to introduce myself. Nice fellow but kind of young.
We then proceeded to make a quick looksee of the Ancient and World coin section. Once thing great about the ANA show is all the dealers who deal in World and Ancient coins are located in one area, with the exception of those in the 'Budget Section'.
We then made our way over to see Chris Clements at Northeast Numismatics. We shot the bull with him for a few minutes then went to eat.
When we returned we headed for the 'Budget Section', all coins $499 and under. Look through some dealer cases with not much success. Did stop at Allen Berman's table and talked to him. He didn't have a James II or Stephen coin at the show but told me to email him. For those of you who have never met Berman, let me tell you. He is a very nice guy. He was helping another customer when we walked up to his table but still took time to acknowlege us. I can't tell you at how many tables the dealer just ignored our presence. Berman is truly great with the interpersonal skills.
We went to the Sentry Box, some of you NC guys know the owner. Saw a nice 1826 Shilling in NGC MS61. Thought about it, but passed. We looked around the bourse some more before heading to the exhibits. There we saw an 1804 Dollar (US) and two 1913 Liberty ('V') nickels. Pretty impressive seeing $2 million + coins.
Purchase wise I picked up the follow:
GB 1872 shilling. Nice choice Unc. with blue toning on obverse. Bought from NEN
GB 1935 Crown. BU bought from Josh Moran
Canada 1899 1c AU/Unc
Canada 1916 1c RB unc.
Canada 1871-H 25c G need for my date album
Canada 1886 25c G " " " " "
SA 1954 1/2d Proof with the most awesome blue toning
SA 1954 1d Proof with the most awesome blue toning
The latter two coins were found by Mrs. ajaan She said Terry (spinaker2000) would like them.
The bourse was fairly busy. We couldn't park at the Convention Center of the parking lots in the immediate area.

A lot of hammered coins but mainly more common stuff, Edward III and so on. NEN had a most awesome Philip and Mary 6p. Great portraits and outstanding details. But it was way out of my league price wise.
For the English/British coin collectors out there. Prices were very steep. They seem to have doubled or more since the ANA in Charlotte. Dealers are asking a lot for some coins, whether they are selling at their prices, I don't know. James Ricks at NEN said he can't buy Brit coins from British dealers anymore because they are so expensive. He also said many British collectors in the UK are buying choice coins from US sources.

I agree with you about Allen Berman. Very friendly, helpful, loves talking about coins, expertise in hammered stuff. I think he just published a book on French medeval (sp) stuff. He sets up every now and then at the West Haven, CT monthly show. His website is bermania.com

The dealers can't keep original very choice unc. and better coins in stock. It's not that young Ricks can't buy because they are "expensive", it's because the quality of available British coins is sorely lacking.....the pound at 1.85 or so isn't making choice to gem coins any cheaper either...
The fuel on the fire is that Brits are now looking beyond the typical EF-slider unc. material to much better quality coins because they have ready cash from property equities and the like......

Sorry I missed you I was out there
All in all not a bad show, now I am headed out.......
I did see some conder tokens. Many of the nice ones were in a case of a British dealer. All his prices were marked in £. Not knowing too much about these tokens I don't know if his prices were in line.
Glenn, we looked but couldn't find you. Our whole tripped was hurried and we could only spend 3-4 hours in Pittsburgh, Kelly has to go into work today (Friday) so we couldn't spend the night. I did see a lot of nice British coins but as I mentioned, prices were very strong. I'm seriously thinking of stopping the English collection where I am now, I need about 7 more monarchs, and start collecting something else. Pricing is just getting too high on the English/Brit material. The whole reason I stopped with liteside coins was pricing, and although GB material isn't near the cost of US, it may be time to move into another realm of collecting.

Excellent comments... I am thankful I bought what I bought when I bought it.
I have always thought that condition/grading for British coins would be an issue and it seems that it is...
BTW, Sentry Box is a great table to visit at a show.

I just got back from a trip to London and noticed that British coin prices in the coin shops there -- which are of course listed in pounds -- are about twice what you would pay in the US. Needless to say, I came home empty-handed.
