MS69 Question...

Today I FINALLY received my collectors club packet and I have a question regarding the "Free" MS69 SAE that was enclosed. There are a number of marks on the coin, specifically seven small gouges on the obverse and two scratches on the reverse. I am really surprised this would go 69...I would say 67 or 68 at best. Does PCGS just slab these as MS69 without actually grading them?

If so, I think that is a terrible policy. If not, they were WAY off on this one.

    I think so. Mine had a 2 point reed hit and a scratch. I just sent it back with my submissions and I got a new one that was much better.

    I think they are more like sample slabs.
    You'll note there is no serial number or type number associated with the slab/coin.
    This you can't put it in the registry.

    it would make a great toning exeriment coin. Set it on your window sill for a full year facing south image

    If this one is a 69 then I have a stack that would have to go MS70! I think I will send it back with my "Free" submissions.

    If they are not actually grading these, and they are intended as more of a sample slab, then they should label them with "uncirculated" and not "MS69". So far, I am not very impressed with PCGS. It took them 18 days to simply mail a package and the SAE is overgraded. When I received a reply from them regarding the extraordinary length of time to mail a package, they said "we are behind because of the busy show schedule". Did they not know in advance that there were going to be coin shows?

    Most sample slabs are not graded these days. Back in the mid 1990's PCGS did put a grade on the samples but they minimum graded it. Every sample was slabbed MS-64 (since that was the lowest grade coin in the roll) but most of them are really MS-65 and MS-66 quality.

    Well at least now we know how they dispose of the 67 and 68 SAE's...they just slab 'em as 69's!
