Question for Ike Experts about 1976 Type 1 and Type 2

I have noticed several eBay aucitons of PCGS and NGC graded 1976 Type 1 and Type 2 Ike Dollars where only the obverse of the coin is shown. The coins are usually designated on the holder as type 1 or type 2, but it has been mentioned on this forum before that sometimes the coins type is misidentifed by the grading service.

Is it possible to tell from an obverse picture alone if a 1976 Ike is a type 1 or type 2?

Sure. There are several pretty big differences and one can be spotted even from
a distance. The '76 type II Ike has a large crease in the neck under the ear which
starts near the truncation and extends upward at a steep angle toward the back of
neck near the "hair" line.

There are no known mules.

I have two three-piece proof sets from 1976, I believe all three coins in these sets are silver clad. If I understand the distinction between Type I and II properly (thickness of the reverse lettering being the most obvious PUP), then I have one of each type. However, the PCGS Pop report doesn't distinguish between the two types on the silver clad issue, just the CuNi clad coins.

Could I have a rarity on my hands??

Sean, maybe you do have a special rare coin. The PCGS registry doesn't list two different types for the 1976 silver proofl

What about this auction, is it a possible cherrypick situation or a picture of a different coins reverse? The seller has a silver Ike auction that looks like it has the same reverse picture.

Feh - false alarm. I pulled out both sets, they're both the same. About all I can figure is one is much frostier than the other, and that tricked me into thinking the letters were thicker until I held them side by side. Or I'm simply an idiot.
