My coin gallery

I am an eager collector of Nepalese coins and now I have scanned part of my collection and put them in a Yahoo gallery. I will keep updating the gallery each week (new updates will be announced in my sig line), so pop in often

In time I will also make galleries of some of my Danish and foreign coins as well as my German emergency paper money from WW1.

You are welcome to give comments and suggestions.

Colin, the 1931 double mohar is a classic, almost always found in nice grade. I don't think this coin type circulated much at all. I have never seen a double mohar more worn than VF, and those are in fact scarce.

The real trick is to find these coins dated in the early twenties or before. Despite the catalog prices, some of them are VERY scarce.

Angielczyk, welcome aboard!

Yes, your coin is Nepalese. It belongs to a series of coins minted during the so-called Lichhavi Period (c. AD 576-750). The diameter of the piece should be around 25mm.

This particular type was minted under a king named Amshuvarman between c. AD 605-15. It is fairly common, however your specimen is unusually sharp on the reverse (first picture). The obverse of the coin is unclear but the shape of a lion is fairly clear. Above it at 1 to 2 o'clock is the legend of the coin which simply reads the king's name.

Your coin can be identified as Rhodes # 21 (Rhodes, Gabrisch and Valdettaro: "The Coinage of Nepal", RNS, London 1989). I cannot tell you anything about the value of it, however. I can just say that it is nicer than they usually come.

I did not realize how old this coin really was.

It was given to me some 35 years ago by a friend from India.

I have since spent quite some time in Nepal (about 12 months ) all told and have come to love the place and therefor am not interested in selling the coin so that the value is immaterial.

Is it possible that the picture on the obverse is a dog similar to the Chinese Pekinese?

Nope, the creature on the obverse is in fact another lion. Lions appear one side or both sides of the vast majority of Lichhavi coins.
