Hello All...New member who needs advice!!!!!!!!!

Hello,
I've been collecting coins for a number of years and believe to have a nice collection. I had no idea as to the value of coins(wow)! I would just get a coin I thought was cool and put it away along with some of the coin gifts I have gotten from family members. Can I get some advice on being a more knowledgable collector? Why is it that some lincoln cents are worth so much when they're not that old? I will submit a list of coins that I have for you to take a look at and let me know if I have anything great.

How do I go about getting my coins graded?

Thank You.

Welcome to the boards! First, I would get a book on grading and get the PCGS book on grading and counterfeit detection. Also, I would get a red book.

If you have some pictures of some of the coins, we can give you our opinion too. Next, you can join the PCGS club and then submit some of them to PCGS and get their opinion.

    Welcome aboard.

Don't get your hopes to high yet unless you're confident of your grading. The only
recent Lincolns that have substantial value are varieties or very high grades.

    Good luck.

    First of all, image

Lincolns are often worth a lot because they are very popular despite relatively high mintages across the board. (Same is true with Morgan Dollars, for example.) Pricing is all supply and demand. Where demand is high, prices will be higher even for relatively common coins.

To be more knowledgeable about numismatics, read a lot. Read about what you are collecting. Build a reference library if you can. If you can't afford that, join the ANA (if you haven't already) and use their library to borrow books. Learn how to grade whatever type of coins you're buying to help prevent you from getting ripped off.

As for getting them graded, your best bet might be to describe them here, with pictures if possible, at least of the ones you think are more valuable. That could help us determine whether or not it's worth the $15-30 per coin to get them professionally graded and encapsulated (aka "slabbed").

Will hit the library tomorrow for some literature. I will get the pics of some of my coins on this weekend while I'm at work so you can see what I have.
    Thanks for the advice all.

Welcome. As a start, a good way to become more knowledgeable would be to read the threads here, pay attention and ask questions!

Like I said I'm new to this. These are some coins that I just happened to get for change or on the ground during my hikes that happened to still be in my truck. My better coins are in storage and will try to get to them in a couple weeks when my house is done. I also have alot of lincoln pennies and some are 1916, 1923, 1936 and on up. I know some of these coins are worthless but cool all the same to me since it's all new to me.

And for some reason I can't upload pics.....Any advice.

First of all start by reading this threadPosting Pictures It will help a whole bunch. Then if you turn on your PM function, people can help you without posting. It's like email.

Welcome to the boards. As stated before, ask questions here on the boards no matter how " stupid " it may seem. Read what has been posted before, read books on grading and compare how they differ on how different they are between grades and within the same grade. Then again this has been stated in this thread already. Also post pictures if you can so it would be easier to help.

Pics don't want to upload. It may be the firewall here at work. Pics will have to wait for a couple weeks as I built a new home and won't be ready to move in until then and all is in storage. Until then I will enjoy reading some books on coins and continue here in the discussion forums.

    Welcome to the forums!

If you're interested in becoming a more active collector and spending more money (going to coin shows or dealers, etc.), then I highly recommend that you read Scott Travers' Coin Collector's Survival Manual, which tells you how to go about being a coin collector: How to Buy, How to Sell, All About the Grading Services, About the Numismatic periodicals, etc.

If your goals are more modest, then I'd recommend starting with A Guide Book of United States Coins (the "Red Book") by R.S. Yeoman (available at most larger bookstores and some libraries). It's a great introduction to coins and lists retail prices for all US coins. You might also want to read one of the monthly coin magazines (which are mostly aimed at beginners), like Coins or Coinage.

Also, if you live near Rochester, NY, you might want to look into joining the Rochester Coin Club and you would certainly want to go to their annual coin show (I think it's in October or November).
