My new favorite coin.......1794 Farthing

I saw this coin while surfing the foreign coin section on Ebay and since I own 0 foreign coins or tokens....I just had to have it. The history behind this coin must be facinating

1794 British Sailing Ship farthing

I know it's D & H number, but have no idea what it's true value is.......I might send it off to NGC to be graded.

If I knew what it was....you'd be right. I found another 1794 Farthing on line that was identical to mine and it had the D & H number, but I have no information on D & H at all????

D&H refers to the authors Dalton and Hammer of the authoritve book on Conder Tokens

I have not seen you post in quite sometime. Got tired of the Lite Side eh. Nice coin. You will now be reeled in by the Dark Side The vette looks great also. I am still working on mine. But the lure of the Dark Side makes it more difficult. Only so much extra money to go around.

Yes I have been missing from coins for about 2 year and I have focused on collecting Comic books. Yep, still have the red beauty and I still like to take it out on the weekends. My daily driver is a 2003 PT Cruiser, but I am looking to purchase a 2005 Mercedez Class C by the end of this year

As for converting to the darkside.....I think you are right as a log of the 16th and 17th century coins are very affordable. I have always been into coins for their history more than their net worth so I have about 10 bids in on some older stuff. I can't wait to get my hanmds on them

I didn't know that what I bought was a Conder token either. I actually have heard the term, but never knew what was being discussed. I might have to try to find a used one some where on line

Your Conder token is catalogued as Hampshire DH 102
Earl Howe was an Admiral in His Majesty's Royal Navy.

England took up arms against the French Revolution when Louis XVI was executed. One of Englands actions was to blockade the French coast. In 1794, grain from America was being transported to France by convoy, and the French squadron based at Brest and commanded by Rear Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse went to escort the convoy in.
The Glorious First of June refers to a 4 day battle between the British and French navies May 28 - June 1, 1794 with 26 ships on both sides.
May 28th and 29th they fought several small battles before the French withdrew with Admiral Howe in pursuit. He caught the French on June 1 and engaged the French line.

The French lost 7 ships, with 7,000 casualties, while the British had 8 seriously damaged ships and 1,150 casualties.

Unfortunately no. The last (and only) price guide that covered all of the varieties was Schwer's guide published in 1981. There have also been some editions of British tokens and their values but it didn't cover all of the varieties and it hasn't been published for some time now.

As far as rarities the only real estimates are those in D&H. Notes on 18th Century Tokens by Arthur Waters contains mintage figures on many of the tokens which is also helpful.

The latest information on availablity is found in a CD by Dr Gary Sriro. He has spent some years recording the appearance and sle of some 25,000 DIFFERENT Conder tokens cataloging what varieties, (and edge combinations) have appeared and how many of each. (There have been 19 different specimens of your Hampshire 102's listed in his database. The 102a with a plain edge does not appear in the database.) Roughly half of all of the known varieties and edge varieties have appeared and are listed in the CD, about 2,600 varieties are listed and pictured.

As for what you paid, te farthing tend to go higher than the halfpence. A common halfpenny in that condition I would be trying to be into at $22 - $25, so I hink you did ok.

More good info, now where can I get this CD from?????? Any idea how big the token I purchased is???????

I saw some other tokens listed as scarce so I am wondering if the sellers are just using that in the description to add value or if they actually know that the varieties they are selling are rare?

The CD is offered by Dr. Gary Sriro. He as 2 different CD available. One tracks past sales and includes a large number of pictures as Conder101 has indicated. The second is a Conder Token Identifier - a Word document with obverse and reverse legends listed in alphabetical order. A simple search based on the legend can lead you quickly to the County and DH numbers used for a given design.

The CDs are about $35. each. Gary's ebay handle is gsriro

Your farthing token should be slightly larger than a nickel.

Dr Sriro and I both published token legend listings in 2002, his as a CD, mine as a comb bound book. I wasn't too happy about it as he knew I had been working on the index for a few years. (Mine would have come out in 98 but my apartment fire in Sept 97destroyed my computer and all of my printed manuscript copies. The dealer who had the one copy I had given away didn't want to loan it back to me. He used it all of the time and was worried he wouldn't get it back. He finally loaned it to me long enough to make a photocopy of it. With that and then a new copy of D&H I started over. It too me to 2002 to be satified that I had corrected all the errors, typos, and omissions. Then the month I sent it to the printer Gary announced his.)
