Grade is in sweet PCGS upgrade (!!!-???)
This is a cool story. I bought a 1910 nickel at a coin show raw. It had a lamination error on in and it had been marked as proof. I bought it and sent it to SEGS b/c I had a couple of coins going out of to them anyway (please don't make it a grading companies bashing thread). it came back from them PF-62 lamination.
I was sending my quarterly special and I thought I'll give this coin a shot and I sent this coin along with "cross at any grade" on the form.
Last week I got a surprise call from PCGS. They wanted to talk to me about said coin. They said they were not comfortable crossing it as a proof but they were willing to cross it as a MS strike coin. The coin in question had characteristics of proof but even I wasn't 100% sure it was a proof. It looked good but not good enough. I agreed to cross it as a MS strike since it would be worth more in PCGS slab anyway. And I asked will it cross and the guy said, "Looks like it".
Not only it crossed but also kinda upgraded. It lost it's proof designation but it's in a higher grade holder now: D

Funny thing about SEGS coins I had 100% success crossing them and so far I crossed 2 of them. One of them crossed at the same grade 1897 1 in neck cent (MS63) and now this.
I’m very happy with PCGS and they way they handled the coin and the situation.
