Need help with this Ike - Altered coin?

I was looking through a box of circulated Ike's and I came across this 72. It appears to have a strong silver colored reverse and the reeding looks to be 40% silver composition. Are there any off metal Ike's from 72 made from 40% silver planchets? There looks to be some off color markings on the obverse at 4 8 and 10 o'clock. Does this look like someone plated it or could it be the real deal? The reeding looks real legit.

1974-D & 1977-D are the only Ikes I know of that have been struck on 40% planchets.

I would check the weight on it .Silver Clad issue 24.59 grams,Copper Clad 22.68 grams.The reverse does looks like it was plated.Maybe it is a filled MM silver issue.There is also Scarce Philadelphia 1972 variety accidentally struck with a proof reverse die (High Relief)Identified by a round world and weakly defined continents)There was a change in minting processes and die steel within the1972 production year. It sure is weird

There are no reported 72's in off metal, even though Hagar claimed to have seen one.

There are 76-D's in silver as well.

How does that endorsement stack-up against others, say Bowers or Breen as examples????

Breen supposedly saw the Hager coin and declared it a fake.

No clue on Heritage.

Maybe it is a filled MM silver issue.

It appears to be a type III reverse, so it wouldn't be a filled MM silver 72.

I'd weigh it. If you don't have a scale, take it to a jewelry store and ask them to.

A very interesting coin, indeed.

Could it have a substance on the reverse, such as a laquer or coating? Of course, I'm not holding it in my hand to see it very well.

Weighing it will be very interesting. Please share when you get the weight.

You can also construct a simple balance and see if it balances with an identified clad ike.

Good advice nwcs, and I have in fact done that just earlier today. I am a pharmacist and one of my collections ( yes I am a collecting fool ) is a collection of old apothecary stuff, including a few really nice old pharmacy scales. I can say that this Ike is heavier than a reg 72 Ike. Later this week I will get an exact weight at work.

Just an update on this Ike. It weighs in at exactly 23.331 grams. That puts it in the middle of the 2 weights. I would now lean towards a plated coin, any opinions? The reeding looks spot on 40% silver though. Weird for sure.

I would guess plated also.I Do not know if the reed count is different on the 40% Silver Clads,Anybody know what the diff is?Please explain.

Just a thought from someone with a guess.

Could the silver plate have covered the edges as well?
I could see where a little tarnish would give the look of 40%.
