POLL #5 - State Quarter Challenge 2003

Going to do several polls to pick the best state quarter design from the first five years. In five or so years, will do another poll for the second batch of 25 and then have the final elimination for the -BEST- state quarter design.

Five polls, one for each year and then the top five from each year will be in the semi-final poll. The design that gets the least votes from all the polls will get the honors of being -THE DOG-

2003 was, in my opinion, the only year so far without a good state quarter design. I voted for one anyway.

This should again be no contest. The Maine quarter is really nice.

After all the years have been completed, I'd like to see a poll where we vote on the WORST State Quarter design.

Shamika, I can do that! Out of these 5 polls, I'll do a best poll and a worst poll...

2003 was another year with no dynamic designs, although I do think Maine is nice & voted for Maine.

I think they could have gotten a little more on that Arkansas coin...

"None of the above" would be my choice; as that wasn't offered, I'll go with Maine (although I think that coastline doesn't exist).

Too bad they didn't use a couple of Dan Carr's designs. They're pretty nice. image

I've noticed in these polls that stste quarters with boats of some sort on them tend to get more votes...

Definitely Maine. Helen Keller is the best thing Alabama could come up with? Do they really mine for diamonds in Arkansas?

Arkansas isn't going to give South Africa a run for their money, but there are a few low grade kimberlite pipes in the state.

I don't believe they have any active mines (could be wrong), but I do recall it being a tourist trap. You give a sweaty guy a $20, he gives you a shovel and wishes you luck.

I guess you could call that an active mine. image

I voted for the bow legged Abe.

I'm doing a SHQ Proof Registry Set and I don't even remember what most of the SHQ's look like. I never even look at mine image

Dan's designs are stunning - most of his proposed designs are head and shoulders above the selected designs.

2003- Year of the clip-art quarter.

Gotta go with Maine on this one. The rest of the designs just make my eyes hurt.

Arkansas does not have any active diamond mines, but we do have the Crater of Diamonds State Park, the only diamond-producing site in the world open to the public. You get to keep what you find!! I have found 25 diamonds there. It does not cost $20 either only $5. The "Uncle Sam" Diamond was found here. The 40.23-carat, white diamond is the largest diamond ever found in North America. I'll take that over ANY coin you can find!!

Check out Crater of Diamonds State Park

BTW the black man in the middle photo (James Archer, now deceased) has found over 15,000 diamonds and taught me how to search for them.

I think the Maine is outstanding and one of the best of all the state quarter designs.

All I can say, after seeing the poll results, is that there must be two people on the boards who live in Alabama.
