Horribly polished. Maybe low grade uncirc or higher circ buffed up.

Very obvious heavy polishing - within an inch of its life.

HEY---Leave shineycoinboy alone. He's 1 in a million.image As far as this seller is concerned---CAVEAT EMPTOR, or, if you'd like---SHYSTER, seems to fit the agenda.image

Oh yeah...ever heard of a buffing wheel? This specimen appears to have met with one.image

The seller was very nice as to take off a few layers of metal from that coin to make it much lighter for you to carry it in your pocket image

This guy has been listing cleaned coins as DMPL for a long time. It really peeves me when I do a DMPL search on Ebay it brings up 40 pieces of his crap.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Wow, selling coins like that on Ebay as DMPL's should be a borderline criminal offense IMO.

I too am leaning slightly toward the suspicion, as my esteemed forum members here, this one may have possibly, just possibly, been ever so gently cleaned at some point. There are tale tell hints, although I suppose that could also be the photo.

I just go by the negs in his feedback:

    "WARNING! 28DMPL's $4364.92 NGC says 3DMPL's 9 alter surf /cleaned, 16 reg grade"

"Recieved a bum cleaned coin and would not give a refund."

"ANACS laughed at coin when brought in. NOT DMPL Watch out! won't refund either!"

"Fraud and thief. Should be hung from nearest tree!!!"

Steve, I read those feedbacks too.
I was amazed 16 came back regular grade!
Jerks like this make selling raw coins for a fair price nearly impossible.
Then again, with someone bidding on this crap....what did P.T. Barnum once say......

    Hey gang,

Sounds unanimous. Bear with me and my "no stupid questions" approach here: Can you help newbies like me see exactly what you see to determine it's cleaned? What are some tell tale signs in a photograph that a coin is cleaned? We don't always have the luxury of such colorful feedback and I'd love to learn from your experience to avoid any costly mistakes.

For example: the fields are *too* mirror like - they should look like (what?)

    or

Notice the hazy edges, especially around the hair, feathers, arrows, leaves and lettering. A naturally proof-like coin wouldn't have such obvious contrast.

I'm just pulling these examples out of thin air, but you get the idea. And what would we look for in person?

Thanks in advance. This forum is very helpful.

Epicrecipe- you nailed it, and answered your own questions perfectly.

For all my years of experience, I suck at spotting cleaned coins, at least in comparison to my colleauges here.

That one, however, is so obvious that even I can hear the whizzing sound in the background. image

Check out this guys operation. He is buying raw morgans for $18 from others on ebay. Then he whizzes them and sells them as DMPLs. Looks like he has been doing it for some time. Then I notices a nice looking 1891 dime and a 1857 half dime. They looked origional but are listed as proofs. He bought them both in NGC MS62 holders. Then he cracked them out and is selling them as proofs for double his purchace price!!!!!! They are MS coins.
