Need help with foreign coins

I have a box full of old foreign coins which were collected by my mother-in-law's while her brother was in the foreign service for 30 years from 1932 -1962. He served every where and would send her coins from there. Non of ther dates are above 1940 most are 1920 ,30 some 1900 1899 mostly British and French and Italian but alot of coins like some from India and Cylon and China ae old where can I look these up is there a good computer link Pleae help

You could check your local library for a copy of "Standard Catalog of World Coins" for a start if it is a large group. Check to see if a local coin dealer does foriegn coins.

Welcome to the forum, hotpocket - if you can take photos with a digital camera we can probably help you identfy certain coins.

Thanks for the fast reply I will go to the liberary and look but ther are so many. also I check withthe only dealer in the area and he doen't do foreign so I'm stuck. a guy in England wanted me to send them to him for research and he would get back to me HA HA but thanks again and I will hang around I'm a new collector just getting into it about a year ago my best coins are a 1882 Morgan O/S MS 64 and a 1878 7/8 TF MS65 two Walker 1941 S MS65 and 1943 MS65 both were sleepers got them for 23.00 apice I have 4 Morgan still raw trying to get enough money together to send them off for grading to PCGS so it won't be cheap

There are a couple of ways - the eaisiest way is to click on the "attach files" button at the bottom of the message box that comes up when you post or reply to a post - when you click it, it will open another window that has a listing of all your uploaded pictures(of course yours is empty now) at the top of this box is a "browse" button this allows you to browse the files on your own hard drive to find the picture you want to up load (one catch - the picture must be 50kb or less)
Find the picture on your hard drive and "open" it and click on the upload word in the top right hand of the sreen that you get then all you do is click on the file you just uploaded and click on the "attach file" button on the same box.

Sounds like a lot but it is quite easy - after you do that a few times I'll tell you how to attach them so the open in the body of your post automatically.

Thanks to all of you the instructions will make it easy. I'll just have to try to compress some of my pictures or use a scanner which does a lousey job. I see someone looking for JFK Halves I have a ton of them my wife worked in a bank and would always throw them in her purse when she got on in the old days. Same with IKE Silver dollar. got about 100 of them some in real good shape. Does anyone know where the high spots are on the JK halves so I can look for ware and try and weed out the ad ones.

I’m sure we can help you or at least point you in the right direction. Unfortunately, there’s no place to go online to identify the thousands upon thousands of world coins “out there.” Still, simple scans or digital pics of both sides means we can rapidly identify them; if that’s not practical, we can usually work from a description of the design and the legends, denominations, etc.

The Krause is the “bible” for world coin collectors and a library copy costs you nothing. Alternatively, you can acquire a latest edition new for $65 or so, depending on the particular volume, or a used recent edition for rather less off of eBay or an online bookseller.

Wow you guys are really fast. I also belong to the NGS and still havn't been able to get on that site lots of trouble with signing in so I joined over here. Now that I'm on the dark side an idea how the 10% rebate works with PCGS an EBay I saw it mention when I sign up but havn't pursued it yet.

Thanks Shep I did it on the first try trouble is trying to keep it below the 50 kb most of my digital pictures aren't. Need to get a 400 Olimpus it takes perfect pictures for attaching to e-bay amazon whatever really good camera expensive. Thanks again for the help Believe me I be asking for more.

Thank you Coin Addict I'll take your advise. I see you collect Franklins pehaps you can help me and answer my question about FBL. What lines are we looking at? The lines at the bottom or the ones at the top or the crack in the bell. I sure would like to know. I have several graded Franklins and some not graded that are duplicates for me if you interrested in looking at them lset me know. Another thing the highest spot on a Franklin is it the Bell top where it hangs and then Ben's shoulder.

Barnes & Noble has been selling the 2005 edition on special for $38.95 with free shipping.
