I prefer to sell to other board members on the BST board. No ridiculous eBay fees that way.

If you have junk or overgraded coins Ebay..... If you have serious or high end coins I would recommend here, are through a dealer, or auction house.image

Usually try the BS&T board here as a first option. If I know smoeone is looking I offer them first!

good question and it depends what you are selling... rare high end coins should go to auction. I have never sold anything on the Buy, Sell or Trade forum, but I would consider that. I have sold to certain dealers and have been satisfied...just be careful who you deal with...

The BST board was designed for just that.Because of the diversity and # of members even the lurkers,I'd say it would be a very good place to start.Remember there are all types of collectors here Circ and MS.Error collectors abound on here.Even some who collect fakes, problem coins, etc. It is always worth a shot.Just remember most of these collectors know their stuff and aren't likely to offer ridiculous money !!!! By that I mean moon money for a modern condition rariety.

  • Ebay is "everymans" chance to get as close to full retail as possible........... If you happen to get two or even better THREE people that just gotta have it, you'll come out smelling like a rose......... Yes, this forum is a good place to sell coins, but Ebay has 10000 times the lookers and buyers......... This might be a better place to sell some more esoteric varieties as the collectors here tend to be very specialized (and smarter than the average ebayer)............ I HATE to sell at shows because I know that as soon as I'm one aisle over, MY coins are in THEIR case at a 30-50% mark-up............ I want to keep that markup for myself, hence my vote is for EBAY

    Sell through me imageimage

Seriously--I would start on the BST board if you have a price in mind--can't hurt. If no one takes your offer, you can move to eBay. Last lot I ran on eBay netted a little more on eBay than the listed price on the boards image... but there were fees image

I try to recover costs or if I sell here decide what it mite bring on eBay, add a bit fer postage or deduct for Bay fees as the case may be and set my price accordingly.

  • I would love to sell on the BST board, but I'm usually not sure what
a fair asking price is. On Ebay at least you have a better chance to
let the market decide the coin value.

I am really surprised by the lack of votes for "At a Coin Show".

I'm not. At a show you sell mostly to dealers or spend all day trying to find the one nondealer there who is looking for your coin.

I prefer consigning to auction. In fact, I have a large consignment in at Heritage for the Pittsburgh show in August. I guess I should qualify my preference because this is my first consignment, but based on the nominal consignment fee and the stiff prices I have seen realized from the better auctions over the years, it's the only way to go in my mind.

By the way, if you see a new thread entitled "Consignments Suck!" around the mid August time frame, you can safely assume I have changed my mind.

Every time I've sold a coin on eBay I made some sort of profit.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

For stuff, I pick up to resale, its goes to E-bay with an ocassional link from the BST, as a courtesy and potential improved results.

In the past I have used E-bay for selling off coins in my personal collection and have always been quite pleased with the results.
I did not use the auction houses becuase I never wanted to lose 15-20% off the top by cosigning to them, however, now that I have trimmed down my collection to the best of the best, I dont believe I would use E-bay for my better stuff any longer. With of all the negative things that have happened at E-bay and people feeling uneasy about larger purchases, I believe I would cosign at least my better stuff to an auction house. In fact, from what I have seen price wise, the auction house prices even taking 20% seem to do so much better than e-bay an the better stuff.

    For example:

Ill use my 16-d Merc PCGS-55 (Has Full Bands but not noted in those grades) also PQ for the grade and a potential 58 candadate today.

In todays market I would venture to say that the coin with good pic's would bring between 5800-6200 on the bay. Deduct 175.00 in E-bay comission an you net about 5600-6000.
Based on a few of the past Major auction sells on this coin at 7500-9000, even with the 20% off you net between 6000-7200.
And this is a coin that has solid demand, but not rare as pieces are availble, although some are not as nice of course, but still out thier.
Change this to a rare or even scarce condition sensitve piece and the difference would be substantial.
