You know, I've gotten that question many times about how I took a picture of the camera, and you guessed right. I have a Toshiba PDR M65 that takes pretty good images, but it's macro doesn't do too well for coins.
On the light kit, I'm looking at a quartz kit that runs about $250.
Aren't those quartz kits supposed to provide perfect white light. I would really like to hear how it works out for you because I was thinking of buying the same (or similar) thing.

Seriously, that is a great setup. Better lighting than you have shown will not be cheap.
I only use the light that is part of my microscope.
