Which quarter do you like better, PCGS experiment

Here's a pair of 1939 quarters from an original roll. They are actually struck from the same dies as they have the exact same die polishing. Quality wise the one of the right is slightly better when it comes to contact marks. So what is different and what did PCGS think about them?

Answer: The one on the left graded MS66 at PCGS and the one on the right graded MS65 in the same submission. Why? The one on the left has been dipped. The one on the right doesn't have any toning and has a totally natural skin. Both are going right back in as I feel they have a shot at MS67. When they come back (in 2 months) I'll let you know what PCGS thought of them this time and see if the dipping again made a difference. {Of 3 from this roll I sent in I dipped 2 and left the best one totally natural, both of the dipped ones came back MS66}

    Very interesting. It seems the eye appeal of the lusterous
    white coin will win every time.

    Just FYI.....PCGS loves newly dipped coins, especially when they exhibit that artificially flashy 'just dipped' lustre IMO, at least that's what I've seen as far as generic Morgan dollars goes over the years.

    I've seen soooooo many original coins with slightly subdued original lustre or non-descript original color get bumped at PCGS after a Jeweluster bath.

    While I prefer original coins I have seen time and again that the blazing white coins are what the "market" wants. Keep that coin dip handy!

    The coin on the left seems to have better detail in the hair, but maybe the dip helped make it appear that way. Or maybe it is just the lighting, in which case forget having read this. image

    I do like the coins to be white. But I like them to be original too. It is natural for a unknowing human to be drawn to the white flashy one.

    That's exactly why the crackout artists fair so well with Morgans. They show up at a show buy a coin, bathe it and the next day its regraded, sold and they walk out with a pocket full of cash.

    The one on the left has been dipped

    If it was dipped, why was it not bodybagged? Did you dip it b-4 sending it?
    What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

    Yes it was dipped before being submitted. Dipping (if done properly) is an accepted form of cleaning silver coins.

    Would you care to render the type/brand name of dip you used? I'd like to try it.image
