How big is the coin market?

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,419 ✭✭✭✭✭
For example, how many people in the world have or are trying to put together a 50 piece type set of slabbed gem (65 or better) silver commems? I'd guess 400 people.

Now it's your turn. Pick a series and tell us how many people you think are collecting it.

Hard to say how many serious Morgan collectors are still active right now. I imagine there are a few sets from the past that are not being upgraded and how many of these are mint state is anyone's guess. The market is quite active and brisk but where the hell are they all going to?

I think there's a whole lot more new collectors than is given credit for. And allot of the new collectors are in "catch up" mode and buying a whole lot of them.

The number of full sets of Morgans is limted to how many 1893-s coins are out there at 1 per set. Sheesh there are more 81-s in ms66 than there are 93-s in ALL grades.
A local gent who used to run a coin store once told me that he had a complete set ( raw I presume) of Morgans in ms63 so if thats true how many others like that are squirreled away!!

WallStreetMan - IF the market is as small as most people are guessing, there's lots of room for growth. Especially in a country of 300 million increasingly affluent people.

I believe the number of Lincoln collectors,Circ and Mint State are literally in the tens of thousands. They will be striving to complete their collections as 2009 approaches.

Wallstreetman, I don't fit any of the above molds. Don't collect any sets by date and have no real goal other than to buy nice coins. There are a huge number of type collectors or generalists (dealers included) who have no set goal or their goal is essentially unachievable.

While there may not be 100 type collectors who are building MS65 sets...and need an MS65-67 barber half....there are thousands of dealers, collectors, and investors/speculators who wouldn't mind having one if offered up.

Five years ago there may have been fewer than a dozen serious clad quarter collectiors.
There were probably only a few thousand people attempting these sets on other levels.
Today there are probably close to a hundred pretty serious collectors and several thousand
interested enough to try to work a set and upgrade it as possible. There are probably anot-
her 100,000 collecting them from circulation and 10,000,000 working on just the states issues.

Aside from those collectors working on sets, you have people who just collect nice very high grade

coins for the beauty of them. While I have a number of Seated Lib quarters and half dollars in PR and MS

as well as Barber quarters and Half dollars in PR and MS as well as 25 Classic Commems, I will never compleate

a set. Only God knows how many of us there are.

    Buffalo nickels - 281 collectors

There are more than 500 collectors of MS Buffalos and probably way more than 5000 for circs.

MS65R or better IHC's.......maybe 50. Only a handful can accomplish it, if you include a truly complete set, not just the incomplete basic set as defined by PCGSimageimage

What are you guys basing these guesses/estimates on?

I'm basing my estimates on the collectors I know, the dealers I know serving collectors I don't know, and an extrapolation of their numbers to reflect the percentage of people I don't know. I also use slabbed populations and market availability as reality checks. My guesses aren't reliable, of course, but on average I'd bet they're in the ballpark.

Going through the Lincoln Registry, I'd say minimum 40 people seem serious to complete full red or nearly full red pcgs sets. Probably more like 50 or more. How many more unregistered pcgs sets? How many more raw (or mixed holder) collections? I would have no idea on how to guess the answers to these other questions.
