  Don, you saw coppercoins' web page with the die-struck counterfeit 1955 DDO? I couldn't buy one raw after seeing that.

  New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  Don,
  The 1922 in the SEGS holder should be from die#2 strong reverse. In true AU grade you are talking about a $3k + coin. Don't go after this key coin looking for a bargin. If it is the real thing in the real grade it will sell for real money. Lots of Lincoln collectors want one. I got mine raw from Bowers & Merena auctions in 1996 for $1,210. It was listed as EF. PCGS body bagged it the first time I submitted it for enviornmental damage on reverse. Second try they slabbed it as VF30. I'm real happy to have it in my collection, even at a loss. It IS the real thing!
  The 1955DD is a classic Lincoln cent. I wouldn't recommend buying it raw because, most likely, it had already been tried to be slabbed and failed. Having said that, I got mine raw in 1992 for $585 from a NJ dealer who said it was "BU". What can I say. I took a chance. I sent it to PCGS six years later and it comes back MS62BN. Again, I'm really happy to own that one which has jumped in value big time in the last couple of years. The point is, it is a GREAT collector coin to own. I just couldn't spring for a red or red/brown, but mine still shows the features clearly with the naked eye.

  I'd check the PCGS counterfit book and if the 55DDO matches I'd but it. But thats just me.

  I would always go for the 1955 if it's genuine, and I am sure with Don's experience, he could tell if it were cleaned. All that's left is looking for some of the ley diagnostics to authenticate it. One of the biggies that isn't usually mentioned is die scratches in the date area. Check my site to see them.

  This is a coin that needs to be authenticated. Don't buy them raw. SEGS does a good job of authenticating.

  If the authenticity of the 1955 DDO isn't a question, then take the 1955 DDO. I know they are both desirable varieties, but to me the 1955 DDO is a powerhouse compared to the 1922 plain. It's just a fabulous variety.

  Actually the SEGS 1922 No "D" AU50 is the Weak Reverse variety. There are (2) 1955 Dbl Dies,but the pics aren't good enough to determine if genuine.I have asked about return policies and if the diagnostics are there.
