the day..the luster... died..

I was at the coin shop the other day and as i was comming in, another man was just leaving. After buying a few seated halves, i began talking to the dealer, as always, about various things, market trends, accented hair kennedys, collecting preferences, and other things. One thing that interested me is that he explained how the guy before me purchases relativeley expensive and rare coins...just to take them home and clean them..at that point both of us cringed..but he said that the man just tells him that that is what makes him happy..and I was thinking.....If you wanted to do somethign that would completeley ruin the value of your 100K coin..would you do it just to be happy? Obviously the investors on the board would probably answer with a firm "NO"..but i would hope the majority of collectors would say "yes".....just a thought

    I suppose it would be no different than a wealthy person going gambling and losing 50K. Each one is throwing their money away, but if they are happy who cares. And by the way, "A PR63 in any other grade would look just as ugly!" image

    Heck no, part of my enjoyment of a coin is in its preservation of it.

    It's a good example of how the supply of nice, original coins is continuing to shrink. It is also a good example of the appeal of "white" coins.

    Yes...... If it is mine and I think it is butt ugly dirty, it gets a bath.
    I don't get why some people buy coins, stick them in a safe deposit box and look at them once or twice a year. Are they collectors or packrats hoping to cash in someday?

    I'm strictly a collector, and that little story gives me the willies. Yes, a person has the right to do whatever they want with the things they purchase, but I strongly believe that big part of being a numismatist is preserving coins to the best of your ability for future collectors. I think that screwing up coins is very "small-picture" and "me-oriented"- we only take care of coins for a short time before they must be passed on responsibly to somebody else....
