Morgan - Proof Like

It seems that Proof Like Morgans are not popular. What are the thoughts on prooflike Morgans? I just bought one and it looks like a gold coin.

I'm a newbie to the boards but have dabbled in the hobbie for a little while.

I love PL morgans! They are really only popular with high grades, and Deep mirrors, or key dates. I do think they will jump in price in about 20 years so I would hold on to it, and enjoy its beuty!

Dclcpa, many collectors like prooflike and/or deep mirror prooflike Morgan dollars for their flashy appearance. Others, do not, however, one of the reasons being that the prooflike surfaces accentuate abrasions, bag-marks, etc.

Boy you can say that again, but sometimes they are gorgeous!

  • I bought this MS 65 PL morgan a couple of months ago and it cost about the same as some of the others in the same date, mint and grade.
But it's the only one that have been looking at it. The gold tones are fasinating.

    I guess they are popular....

I agree with Mark. I would rather have a nice MS66 than an MS60-MS64 PL coin because of all of the chatter in the fields.

  • I haven't gotten any market tips. I was just curious about the price. I kind of lurk around this board for my tips....

Dclcpa, depending upon the particular date and mint, a PL example can be priced very similarly to or much greater than a non-PL piece. Some issues are quite easy to locate with PL surfaces, while others are much more difficult.

  • While we are on the subject, do PLs tone faster or easier than regular strikes?

I agree...i got a ANACS MS 63PL 1884-o for 20 with shipping..... but of course this is probably the most common PL date..but it still gleams like a 1890-ccimage

I like proof like and dmpl morgans.

Proof likes are more of a challenge to find and even more challenging to price.

Enjoy the ones you can get for cheap, most common dates are not too expensive.

    Good luck with anything CC.
