WLH Bodybag for counting machine mark.....????

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
I got my first BB for damage in a long time last week. I was dumbfounded. The BB came back to me with writing on it "Rev. counting mach. mark." The coin is a Walker that's pristine and rim toned blue/lilac....MS65-66 imho. Before I sent the coin I looked at it under 5x and 20x loupes, and nothing was obvious except a sweet coin with cartwheel luster. I looked at it again and even under 20x it is sweet with nothing obvious to me but limited bag marks. What in the devil is a counting machine mark?? BB'd for a mark?? No I don't have a pic because it's heading to you know who right now. Can someone explain what a counting machine mark is??? Thanks, Chrisimage

Usually near the rim are abrasion marks where the coin was grabbed by a counting machine and rolled. If there's rim toning, it might be hinding under that toning and difficult to see.

Not intending to question your assessment of the grade, wouldn't the coin still be entitled to a grade below Mint State even with a "counting machine mark"?

Wouldn't a "counting machine mark" simply downgrade the coin to some circulated grade?

They look like little snakes ~. Also known as wheel marks.
Pcgs considers it a form of damage and will bb for it if they see it.

    Manorcourtman,

Put down the magnifier for a minute and pick up the coin and tilt and rotate it at as many angles as you can under a good light.

Do this close-up, as well as from a distance of as much as a foot - sometimes one can see at a distance, that which he cannot see up close and personal.

Look for a smooth looking, shiny, different textured area on the coin.

Yeah, I had what otherwise would be a MS-66 1969D JFK get bagged at NGC for a counting mark. ARGH! But I still have it. Has nice color, too. Just raw.

Thanks guys. I learn something new everyday. I don't recall seeing "snakes" but that clearly explains the concept! We'll see. I'll post results when I see what the guys across the way think about it. Bodybags suck!!!!! C.

I have a beautiful 1929 SLQ in a segs holder, denoted "counting wheel mark" I have no problem at all having this coin in my collection.

There's always ANACS or NCS. If the coin has good eye appeal it might be worthwhile to slab it.
