Are you a U.S. Coin Forum "pontificating crybaby" like me??!!??

WOWZER, that's a mouthful to say and a bitter pill to swallow. Heck, I even had to look up pontificating to be sure I qualified. Oh well, live and learn.
But, anyway, I have a question. How do YOU determine when someone is a qualified expert in their chosen field??
And no, I don't think I am!!
Thanks in advance.

Besides longevity I look for published works. If the person has written books on a particular field chances are they are quite knowledgeable in that field. While there are some real clinker books out there, the best method I have found is to actually buy and read the book, then form an opinion.
I also look to see if a person is currently active in a particular field. If the person has not been heard from much lately there is a chance that the person is out of touch with current market situations. This is especially critcal when dealing with moderns.
Lastly, I like to see if the person actually seems to like the coins or is just in it for the money. You can usually tell if the person is really excited about certain coins or just hyping a sale. Usually if a person is honestly excited about a coin then there is a good bet that he or she will take the time to become more knowledgeable about the subject than someone just wanting to make a buck.
whew, that's a relief. i've been hunkered down in self-analysis wondering if i really knew anything!! probably just an offshoot of the too-much-coffee-buzz!!
anyway, back to the question. how do you decide who to trust in areas you're unfamiliar with??

Hey Keets,
Forget it! Don't start questioning yourself or you will turn into a yes man that just agrees with everyone else. Take the weekend off, go get a buzz on in whichever manner suits you and come back here next week all fired up and ready to battle. You tend to have a , how shall I say this, counterpoint opinion sometimes that livens up this board. Usually you are totally wrong but hey, it's fun!

Keets' wrong opinions are the best around!
They're usually more informed and well thought out than most peoples' right opinions.

Really, if you got the love and the knowledge you too can be an expert.

Part of life is learning how to disagree politely with others(I'm still working on that one), but still get your point of view out in the open, which you should be entitled to do.
Stick around, i enjoy your company and i'm sure others do also.

Not sure I agree, but to this day I think it was a great thing to tell an 18 year old.
To qualify as a talking head "expert" on TV news shows, you mearly need to answer a phone call.

The word ''Expert," or should I use the term title in place of word in this case, is more the "bitter pill to swallow." I prefer to use the line... those with "Expertise"... when referring to someone that possesses vast knowledge in whatever field it may be that one is inquiring. There are too many "EXPERTS" in the world. Everyone's an "Expert these days...Have ya noticed?

Would that be a pontificating crybaby whiny thread??
I always look for experts that can instantly back up opinions and assertions with evidence, data, a clear logical trail, etc. Like when people offer grade opinions, and then note which marks, attributes, or qualities went into that grade formulation. I think real experts are always open to new ideas and the evolution of their own thinking...
