  A bigger problem than counterfeits is that much of the raw early gold listed has been cleaned or worked in some other fashion.

  The coin in question is this one in the link. It looks legit, but cleaned. I'm not an expert on grading and such, but wondered if I should even waste my time with that auction.

  It looks very cleaned, although the blurry photos don't help. The seller may be legit, but a total of 13 feedbacks isn't a lot to base an opinion on, especially when you're talking about purchasing an eagle.

  That's what I'm afraid of. Dropping hundreds down for a fake. I was curious if alot of fakes of these coins were made.

  I found one in an NTC slab I like better. Does grading companies matter with gold? The grade isn't as big of a concern to me as authenticity wih gold. Thanks for your help.

  Other than PCGS and NGC there is no financial incentive for a TPG to make sure the coin is authentic and graded properly.
  
  I have a couple of PCGS BB's for Not Genuine that gives me the incentive to only buy NGC or PCGS gold coins (or ANACS because I trust them for their expertice).
  
  For all the others, I'd bet they are genuine - but I sure wouldn't bet much.

  I realize that anything not the top 3 isn't very reliable as far as grading, but I'd figure most could authenticate. Thanks for everyone's advice and possibly saving me from heartache later.

  Is it real? Is it cleaned? Is it tooled? Why screw around? I bought a nice NGC AU-58 $10 Indian from a forum member here (Dukie101) for under $400. Who needs ebay? This forum is a great place to buy coins like that.

  I wouldn't buy raw gold from ANYONE on Ebay, even someone (like me!) may have hundreds of feedbacks, all positive, yet not an expert on gold.
