SMS vs Circulation Strike coins...

...Is there a way to tell the difference? 1965 in particular...

Would an SMS coin be acceptable for my Dansco Type Set or should I stick to regular strikes? Baley? Russ?

Well as for the SMS vs Biz. That's your call. But when it comes to high grade it can be quite difficult to differentiate between them. I have heard several times of people pulling them out of original rolls and PCGS slabbing them as SMS even though they marked it as biz.

For 1965 specifically, there are only two die marriages unique to the business strike coins, so SMS examples are really only obvious when they have mirrored surfaces. Those SMS coins struck from well-used dies are pretty much impossible to tell from circulation strikes. In other words, for type set purposes, I don't think it really matters.
