1981 Type 2 Kennedy

anoldgoatanoldgoat Posts: 1,493 ✭✭✭
I've been putting together a Kennedy collection. I figured I'd complete a Dansco album.
Question is how rare are the 1981-S Type 2's. The SBA Dansco album has a spot for the SBA type 2 but the Kennedy album doesn't. Is the Kennedy easier to find or is the SBA just that more popular?

I don't know about the SBA, but the Kennedy isn't really "rare". That word is way over-used. It is pricey, though. Value for a PCGS graded example in 69DCAM has doubled from about $90 to $180 over the last six months. Raw would be substantially less, though.

The main difference in pricing on the '81 type 2's is demand. The half sells at small
premiums in lower grades. It is clues like these that tells you where the real values
are and what absolute rarity is.

I do better with numbers so that is my crux.

What I see is there are more 1981 type 2 SBAs for sale on eBay than 1981 type 2 Kennedys, less Kennedy's?
SBA type 2 in Dansco album, Kennedy not, less Kennedy's?
SBA price much higher, much less SBAs?

In modern proof coins, where most were saved, what is the determining factor on price? I'd think all things being equal that it would be mintage. Well it ain'timage

Maybe, maybe not. There are about nine times as many proof Kennedy sets as proof SBA sets, so it may simply be that the Kennedys get tucked away by collectors and don't come to market as frequently.

Followup: If the pop reports are an indication, your assessment appears to be correct. Over 1500 SBA's graded, under 900 Kennedys.

Now to confuse you a bit more....

Becareful buying Type IIs raw. I've seen what I think is really three types of mint marks on these coins.

Type I is easy to distinguish from Type II, Type III really looks like a Type II but will often be slabbed a Type I by the TPGs.

As for rarity -- I often look for these coins in 81 proof sets. I have found more SBAs than Kennedys. I think the really rare Type II is the Lincoln.

Though I do believe finding any Type IIs is getting more and more difficult. If you can find a nice Type II of any denomination for a slight mark up, I'd buy it.

As for numbers I'm not sure there's a mintage on just Type IIs.

However, they are much more difficult to find than AH Kennedys.

cladking - I agree. But all things being equal, ie

Same seller, same day, SBA vs Kennedy. If there is such a disparity in price why does the Red Book and Dansco recognize the SBA and not the half? Usually if the coin has a space in an album it is more readilly available, in the Red Book, same thing.

Am I looking for conformity in the wrong place?

And much easier to find in DCAM.

How can you tell if an '81 is type I or II?

Perhaps more in the wrong time.
