Virus received from this board?

Upon booting my computer just now my virus program told me I had the Downloader.delf.2 virus, After deleting it I went to the McAfee site to investigate the source of the infection. The site said the virus can be spread through newsgroups, etc. As I had no Email yesterday and visited no other boards my suspicion is this board. Anyone have any thoughts?

My Norton AV went off about 2 weeks ago when i clicked on a link in one of the threads. Seems one of the posters linked to a site that had a virus exe. Just one more good reason to always have virus protection running.

I just got a Downloader.Trojan virus of some kind. I think that's similar to what you got.

I understood it to say that it's from downloading some other program that the virus attaches itself to???

I know of no way that you could get a virus from visiting this site. This is not a "newsgroup" in the sense that the McAfee site means it.

That's certainly true, but even if so it seems a bit misleading to say it came from this board.

Kranky, your splitting hairs. If someone is using this board to direct people to an infected site then this board is a part of their scheme. ss350camaro had the same thing happen to him a couple of weeks ago.

For those of you who get infected by following links, you need to keep your antivirus software updated on a regular basis. Also check your security settings in Netscape/Explorer. Make sure all the items dealing with running executables and downloads are selected to prompt, and never click on "OK" when the prompt box comes up on an unknown site you visit.

Sorry, didn't intend to split hairs. I just wanted to point out the difference between getting a virus from here, as opposed to getting a virus from a link that takes you to another site.

What I probably should have said is that you can not get a virus simply from visiting these boards. But once you click a link that takes you somewhere else, you are at risk.

    GAT,

There are some that require nothing more than being connected to the web in order to attack your system - they enter through various port vulnerabilities. As an example, Sasser entered through port 445. With it, it's not necessary to open an eMail, execute an attachment, or even have your browser open. Are you on some form of broadband? If so, you're conected as soon as you boot in to Windows.

I have received several scam paypal emails that have contained viruses. Apparently the scammers are now including a worm I guess to try and infect the papal or ebay site when you forward it to spoof@paypal or ebay.com. Mcaffee picks it up right away when I hit send and will not allow it to send. It could be coming from one of the discussions concerning these emails?

Some of us do not need to worry about such things:

Mine doesn't even exist as far as the outside world is concerned. Any scan simply comes back no port at this location.

You can easily test your computer vulnerabilites by goin to an open port scanner. They are free to access on the internet and will scan your network to see which ports are open to attack. These are just a few.

Russ, I am on a 56k dialup, not broadband. Also my firewall is suppose to reject any attempt to connect to a port.

Mine don't either, there are other lines in the Cisco configuration that stealth my ports. What I posted were the two lines that shut that port down on the LAN side of the router. On the WAN side, that port does not exist.

May be spyware issues, too. An old spyware may have decided to activate and download crap to your computer. Try Spybot S&D and AdAware and scan your PC (update the programs before you scan, obviouslly).

You wouldn't get a virus from surfing this site but if you clicked on a link from here, then maybe but highly unlikely.
