Yep. Billy was a good friend, even if he wasn't quite the model citizen. I split my first Long Beach table with him back in late 1980.

This thread has become a laugh and I'm almost sorry I started it. Bill Mulligan was a really good numismatist and a friend of mine. I helped finance him when he went in business for himself. I personally spent hundreds of thousands of dollars with him previous to that. He disappeared in 1981, never to be seen or heard from again. There were two other guys who I did not know personally, one who was a little momma's boy who also helped finance him and another who appeared sometime in 1980,. who was a somewhat seedy individual.

I was on vacation when he disappeared. Just vanished. I DID go out and find the one partner in an affort to find some answers. I felt comfortable enough with what I was told to believe that he ( Bill) didn't rip me. We were all young guys with a lot of money and as young people can be, we flashed it. My speculation was that Billy flashed it in the wrong place and he met his ultimate doom. It's a feeling more than anything.

It was a long time ago, but it bothers me when I think about it and after considerable thought, I decided to post an inquiry in the hopes that someone might surface who knew something.

Obviously that didn't happen.

I'd still like to know though.

When a friend is (probably) killed, "interesting story" is not how I would describe it. There are still some unanswered questions far more important that the fact that a few coin dealers (myself included) and collectors lost a few bucks.

Is there any real evidence that Mr. Mulligan was killed, or is that just hopeful thinking on the part of friends and associates that don't want to believe he could possibly have absconded with the funds? I know if I were in that situation and it were a friend of mine, I'd be very apt to believe anything other than the possibility of criminal activity.

Andy........ I was not trying to make light of this situation I was simply making a comment about this mans mysterious disappearance, and it "is" an interesting story...... The fact is that no one knows exactly what happened to this individual so don't get upset with me for making a simple comment.

I have had more friends die and disappear over the last 40 years than you can imagine and would definately make an interesting story, especially those friends that were lost or killed in Nam.

Russ, ok strickly business. The FBI "claimed" that Billy absconded with a couple million. That was "pre collapse". That said, and assuming the "claim" was accurate, how much was said claimed amount now worth after the collapse? 25%? Maybe? Then factor in they would have been stolen goods. Now how much? 100 grand?

People don't disappear with 100 grand for long. It's ridiculous.

It's not wishful or in your words hopeful thinking that he was killed.

It was a tragedy. An unexplained one, but a tragedy nonetheless. I would have been right for the throat for the kind of money I was out and I mean it. But I didn't buy being ripped off then and still don't.

I was hoping to find someone who knew him and only one person here did, I appreciate the posting of his thoughts.

Maybe I should have just let it go, but as I said when I started this, I had thought about it quite a bit, so there it is.

Sorry if I took up too much space here and thanks for the latitude.
