I took my son and my brother to the Charlotte NC coin show yesterday, and let me say that I was so disappointed. This was the absolute worst coin show I have ever seen or attended. It looked more like a garage sale than anything. About 80% of the dealers there were jerks( that is being nice about it ) and most of the coins were junk. Only two people that I talked to were even willing to trade or buy a couple of my slabs I took with me, but offered next to nothing for them so I brought them home with me. I won't ever be going to Charlotte again. What really sucked is that I had to drive 2 1/2 hours to get there and then that back, and nothing to even talk about on the drive home except how pitiful it was. My son who is 12 yrs old, is excited about collecting coins, comics, and cards, and he was very disappointed as well. He asked me "Is that what its all about"? What do I tell him????
I guess I will try the Raleigh show at the end of the month and see how it goes.

I just moved from Waldorf, MD (lived there 10 yrs) last year back to Fayetteville, NC where I grew up. Probably not the best move I have ever made, but my whole family is here, so I am happy.
I loved Frederick MD. I used to drive through there all the time going to Charlestown. I would stop there all the time to eat. The mountain scenery is the best. I still have friends in Upper Marlboro, so I may have to take you up on that offer of coming to the OCT show.

Wow, I guess the smaller regional shows in Charlotte have been forcasting an end of market run-up for about 15 years now.

If you want to see a really great show with a large diversity of dealers and product, come to one of the Frederick shows. Every dealer has a smile on their face and something nice to say....Ken
I agree the Charlotte show this time was horrible. But usually its one of the better shows for this region. There are two major reasons why the show was not good. 1st) There were two major shows going on, 1) in Norfolk which took some of the better dealers from the Viginia tidewater out of Charlotte. 2) Long Beach, several of the larger regional dealers (at least 5 I know) were attending this show. These are the dealers that have the better certified higher end material becuase they travel the circuit in a far greater area than locally. Many of the dealers that were in Charlotte, have the same material that gets traded and traded becuase they dont have the resources to get the fresh material, becuase they are so localized.
I saw some of the same coins that have been sitting in the same dealers cases from last year. Very little fresh material if any. Tons of overgraded raw and problem coins. And of the few certified coins that were there, many were the most common type always available. Common date MS morgan's, late date walkers, 50' and 60's washington quarters ,etc. There were one or two better date coins I saw, but I felt were average to low end for the grade at best.
Dont give up on charlotte quite yet, you just need to pick a better charlotte show to attend. Wait till the state show is thier or one of the larger promoted shows that bring in the better dealers.
