Earlier today I spoke with two representatives from the ANA who gave me permission to announce the following:
The ANA is in the process of working on a joint program with Ebay to address consumer protection problems. It is expected (though not promised) that the program will be operational within the next month.
I hesitated to post this, as I will probably be hit with questions that I don't know the answers to and/or those that I am not at liberty to answer. Please don't ask any questions, here or through private messages, as I promise NOT to answer them. If you don't believe me, go ahead, try me.
However, based upon what I heard, I am confident that a real/major effort is in the works, that it will hopefully be launched fairly soon and that it can and will result in a major beneficial impact, on behalf of the good guys, at least.

Carl, I'm with you. I'm also an ANA member, an Ebay seller, and an Ebay customer. I can't imagine their involvement will have anything but positive results for me, and I'm glad they're the party chosen to be involved. I hope the partnership is effective.

Oh yeah, you said go ahead, so here is my question....What is the atomic weight of Platinum???

CARSON CITY, Nev., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- QuikDrop International and Collectors Universe, Inc. today announced a joint consumer protection plan to prevent fakes and forgeries from being offered for sale on eBay. QuikDrop customers now can automatically have their sports cards and sports memorabilia, autographs, and rare coins and stamps authenticated by Collectors Universe experts prior to posting them for sale on eBay.
QuikDrop International (http://www.quikdrop.com/), based in Carson City, Nevada, is the first and largest eBay drop-off store franchise with eight facilities now located in five states. Franchise contracts are in place to open over 250 stores in the United States and 75 stores in Australia.
Collectors Universe (http://www.collectors.com/), based in Santa Ana, California, is the world''s largest third-party authentication and grading service for collectibles.
"Several years ago, the FBI estimated as much as 90 percent of all sports autographs on the market are forgeries. Our exclusive agreement with QuikDrop can help drastically reduce potential problems and restore confidence to buyers of sports memorabilia; trading cards; autographs of famous sports, Hollywood and historical persons; rare coins and stamps," said Michael Haynes, Chief Executive Officer of Collectors Universe.
"Sellers find they get more money for their collectibles if they are authenticated. QuikDrop eBay drop-off stores provide an easy way for anyone to list their items on eBay simply and conveniently, and now we can submit their collectibles to Collectors Universe for expert opinions on their authenticity and state of preservation," explained Murray Mead, Chief Executive Officer of QuikDrop International.
The PSA/DNA division of Collectors Universe has certified the authenticity of all footballs used in the past four Super Bowl games, as well as Mark McGwire''s 70th home run baseball, Barry Bonds'' 600th career homerun ball, and Hank Aaron''s historic 715th homerun bat and ball. Experts in the company''s Professional Coin Grading Service division recently authenticated a $2 million rare coin kept by its unsuspecting owners in a closet for 41 years.
"With all the money being spent by collectors, it is imperative that they are informed about the dangers of forgeries in the marketplace and they insist on third-party credibility and authentication. Our arrangement with QuikDrop conveniently lets sellers take proper precautions and permits collectors to participate in a safe hobby environment and avoid the pitfalls," said Haynes.
Collectibles with a value of $50 or more can be dropped off at any QuikDrop location where they are photographed, submitted to Collectors Universe for authentication, when certified are placed on eBay. Once sold, QuikDrop handles the payment and shipping details with the winning bidder. The customer receives a check in the mail for the full amount of the sale, less the authentication fee and a commission to QuikDrop.
Sorry, I forgot. No questions.

The solution is to have everyone submit their coins to PCGS before allowing them to be listed on eBay.
Finally, a plan that will work

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
It does sound like an oxymoron.
In this deal you send your coins to Quickdrop, they send them to PCGS for grading, sell them on eBay, and send you your money. Only difference is with Teletrade you could tll them which service to send them to, while with Quickdrop your locked into PCGS. Making PCGS the defacto official grading service of eBay.
Are they going to bust the guys on eBay selling the SS Republic half dollars that are harshly cleaned and damaged, but not indicated as such???

Mark, thanks for letting us know something is in the works.

A venue where crooks hang out....... like the Bada Bing.
We might even lead the way for ebay? Cool!
I don't know how the ana hopes to put some sort of enforceable rule over eBay coin sales but it seems like it would be one heck of a task to try and do.
I commend this and I think that, if the ANA takes this seriously, some of the fraudulent sellers can be eliminated, but some problems will remain. I also support that idea of Ebay partnering with NGC/PCGS as an official grading service. Anything that can help cut down on the problems only makes it better for both collectors and dealers alike.
Mark -- keep the info coming!

You'd have to bust NGC first.
