There are a ton of fake Trade Dollars on eBay. Ho-hum, boring, I've seen it all before.

This fake Trade Dollar is slabbed by GGS (who are they?) as a 61.

The reason that I'm confident that it is a slab is that the prior listing of the coin (arlier this week) showed the reverse to be a Type I (berry in the claw). This is an impossible die combination. So I try to do the good thing and point it out to the seller. He basically said that if its slabbed then it must be genuine. He pulls the coin and then relists it with no reverse shown. Kind of slimely.

Lets face it, ANACS, NGC, PCGS (and a few others), while you disagree with grade at least they don't slab a fake coin.

I usually ignore all the fakes on ebay, but this guy takes the cake. I also emailed him last week telling him to pull the old auction. But now he's back. I'll take the one neg and if I get kicked off ebay, oh well. With all the fakes for sale on there, it's a waste of time to be looking at it anyway!

Solution -- any forum member could serve as an Ebay proxy for a particularly choice auction. Just PM the auction information and bidding parameters to a trusted forum member. That's how it's done at live auctions . . . .

Checked out the auction and nowhere in it did he state it was a fake, in red letters or any other color.

Is there anyway to leave a feedback for someone if you have not had a transaction with that person?

It would be nice if we can do that, but maybe that would leave reasonable ebayers open to abuse too.

Good - saves me the hassle of cancelling my membership. ebay is nothing but fakes and all your rules are set up to protect ripoff artists. This guy was trying to sell a counterfeit coin for almost $10,000! And there's another guy selling one for several hundred right now - hell, half the coins listed in the section I pay attention to aren't even real. So go ahead and suspend me, the honest and good buyer, and protect the ripoff artist.

It's odd how they say TDN will not be allowed to start a new Ebay account, while scam artists that get kicked off Ebay usually pop up there under a new name a little while later. Maybe there is some sort of double standard here...

It's obvious to all serious collectors and honest dealers that ebay's most significant drawback is its failure to effectively police its auctions for fraud! Sure, give the boot to TDN while this pinhead seller gets to continue fleecing people.

How tough could it be for ebay to better monitor its coin auctions, especially the rarer coins? The trade dollar auction was so obviously a scam that it could have been pulled very soon after it was posted.

Get with it ebay - you're losing the serious buyers and sellers.

I think someone should compose a letter to eBay stating that it is unfair that the good guy gets suspended, and we can all sign it, and maybe they will reinstate him. It's just not fair!

I can't believe EBay booted you. Your interference was in pointing out that the $10,000 coin was a fake. Your knowledge in the series should be taken into account, and you should have your suspension lifted. Maybe EBay should only accept PCGS, NGC, ICG, ANACS and SEGS certified coins only. Teletrade accepts four of the five mentioned certified coins on their auctions, and for good reasons.

What amazes me is that anyone would buy such an expensive coin without a real certification.

You're also correct in your observation about the "quality" of the Trade Dollars listed on EBay, most are junk or fakes.

I like the idea of a mass petition to get ebay to correct their mistake on at least this one matter. Perhaps we should do it in this thread as well as in RCC. Then, after a few days, someone should email ebay with links to this thread as well as to the RCC newsgroup.

Maybe then ebay will understand the grassroots outrage against them and their erroneous policies.

So, folks, let's keep this thread going with your comments. And, can someone please post to RCC too?
