NOW I understand ACG grading standards.

A VF reverse + an XF obverse = MS60:=>>image<<=Link

    Don't forget the five-point bonus if the coin is being sold on eBay by the "chief grader." image

  • They have their own grading scale, so I assume this is on a scale of 1 to 100 image

    I'm a bit new to this but I've seen the law suits flying round. Why do they grade like that? They're miles out...

    Oh I get it now. I just did an ACG search in Ebay coins. The idea is to get an XF, slab it with them, and then go for it on Ebay...

    Right.

  • so you are saying that they add to grade from "both" sides to make the total grade.

    Vf 20 + Xf 40 = MS60

    Congratulations, Lloyd!! In just a few minutes, you've just figured out what eBay hasn't been able to figure out for years.

    Maybe it's just me, and maybe it's just that coins of Old Nippon are not my forte, but that didn't look too far off to me. Overgraded, sure, but not heinously. Looked like a nice AU to me? image

    "VF"? Dang, you're harsh! image

    (Sure, because it's in a A#@ holder, it's probably cleaned, retoned, tooled, whizzed and so on, but, hey- it looks better than a VF!) image

    I hate to argue with one so Holey image, but take another look at the reverse (BTW the coin is backwards in the sl*b). The Chrysanthemum at the top is almost flat, especially the petals from 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock; the leaves are sorely lacking in detail, especially on the left side; and the denticles from 7 o'clock to 8:30 are gone. Frankly, I thought I was being liberal with a VF for that side. image

    The dragon's scales are reasonably sharp, but to me the wear on the lower denticles of the obverse prevent it from going higher than XF.
