Maybe it's just me, and maybe it's just that coins of Old Nippon are not my forte, but that didn't look too far off to me. Overgraded, sure, but not heinously. Looked like a nice AU to me?

I hate to argue with one so Holey , but take another look at the reverse (BTW the coin is backwards in the sl*b). The Chrysanthemum at the top is almost flat, especially the petals from 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock; the leaves are sorely lacking in detail, especially on the left side; and the denticles from 7 o'clock to 8:30 are gone. Frankly, I thought I was being liberal with a VF for that side.
The dragon's scales are reasonably sharp, but to me the wear on the lower denticles of the obverse prevent it from going higher than XF.
