Got a 1954 Proof set graded across the street

You'll remember that not too long ago I got a proofset from a friend still in it's original box and still sealed. Well - like a good soldier I waited until my birthday to open it up, and it turned out to be a pristine 1954 proof set. The coins had gotten discolored over the years, so I sent the whole thing in to NCS to have them do their conservation magic, and then have NGC holder the coins in one of their new proofset holders. Got the grades today - it should look pretty good when it's all said and done:

  • Nice grades FC57, I have an unopened 54 set that I sure would love to open, but for some reason I'am going to wait awhile. If you don't mind telling, what was ngc's charge for doing that set.

    thanks,

I'll have to wait till I get the set back - I'm not sure if NCS processed all the coins or not, so it's usually what NCS charges plus the grading fee for an economy grading.

Pretty cool. I've been wanting one of those holders wrapped around a SMS. Put up a pic when they get home. image

  • Can you post a pic? I'd like to see how NGC is handling that. I've heard some negatives on their GSA bands.

    Cool!

image If its not too rude to ask (and if it is, feel free to say so) how much $$ did all of that set you back when all is said and done? (without shipping of course)

    Thanks

Frank: Congrats on the excellent grading results on your 1954 Birthyear Proof Set!! I am anxious to see what the finished product looks like.

I may wait for these new set holdered coins to make it to the secondary sales market before purchasing my 1956 Birthyear set image

Very nice birthday present, indeed! (by the way, I was born in 1955 - any chance I can be added to his list?) I am also curious as to the charges for "preservation" services by NCS - I currently still have a certificate from joining which entitles me to a discount on 5 or 6 coins...I talked to them on the phone and asked what they did to the coins. They said that was a secret, they surely couldn't tell me! But I asked was their service just for problem coins, or what? They explained that, no, any coin could possibly benefit from the services they provide. Should I submit ugly toned coins that would probably grade higher if "preserved", or coins that were BB'd for the infamous "altered surfaces"?

First of all - for the record, my birthyear is 57 - not 54 - I still have a few years before I can be considered OLD - Like Russ image

As soon as I get the set I'll post the picture and the NCS charges - As for the holder, I think it's going to be pretty good. It's just like a big NGC holder. At the FUN show we received a souveneir set of state quarters in one of their multicoin holders and it's very nice - very sturdy and shows the coins off well.

  • Hey Frank that sounds like the most beautiful and most perfect set of 1954 proofs.
  • I bought an un-opened 57 proof set (birth year) on flea bay, pretty mundane stuff except the Jeff, just screams 69 but no cameo.
should i just clip it off the set and send it to NGC ?

You can do that - or if you want to leave the set intact and have the whole thing graded I think either service would take it out of the packaging for you.
  • cent looks like a couple carbon spots,full red 64 or 5
    dime is prolly a 66 or 7
    quarter is 66 or 7
    half is 66 or 7
nickel just talks to me,very light golden toning.
    opinions ?
should i just roll the dice and send the whole set in ?

    Thanks
