eBay Scam Warning - Phony Cashiers Check

nencoinnencoin Posts: 1,319 ✭✭✭✭
Attention all sellers: be sure to add Apostleoflight to your blocked bidders list! He is sending out phony cashiers checks. eBay was contacted last week about this guy by another seller, and contacted today by us. Sadly, his account remains active. I guess once the third NPB has been filed, they'll finally remove him.

I guess $8000 in reported bogus cashier's checks, plus who knows how much in other checks that have not been reported, is not enough "evidence" for eBay to boot this criminal. Look at what else he has "bought". Wonder how many of these sellers got cheated.

Yes, it's real. What about the coin is fishy?

Nothing fishy about it, read the description. It is in a NCS holder, which means it is certified as genuine.

You can never tell. This guy has bought and paid for high end items like electronic and an Apple computer. He even bought a coin and paid Heritage. Member since 8/03. Was he setting up all these others?

I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing about gold. The coin simply strikes my eye as questionable. I guess that's why I would never buy raw gold.

Again, this coin is not raw, it is certified by NCS.

Looks like a decent coin to me, despite the damage. Probably the only one on the market right now.

NCS is owned by NGC. I believe they have the ability to authenticate between a genuine coin and a fake.

As soon as you file your NPB form to get your fees back, then eBay will NARU him.

eBay doesn't care if other people lose money, but once they start to lose money they kick into action.

All the ones I send are good. I think it is funny because as an officer of the Bank I have to sign some of them. Nobody I have bought from has either caught it or even noticed it.

Thanks a lot Doug, didn't realize it was case sensitive (and was copying the name from the earlier string).

Also, love your camaro. Would someday love to have an old goat or camaro. For now, must suffer with the new technology (Audi S4, twin turbos, etc.)!

This is frustrating...only one other seller besides us gave this guy a negative feedback. So not only will this guy remain on eBay for awhile longer (I have to wait 10 days after filing NPB alert in order for it to be 'finalized'), he'll remain with only two negatives because no one else wants to post negatives on the guy. I have been in contact with the other seller who left a negative, and apparently he has received threatening emails from the perpetrator. Come on, eBay....wake up...do something!

Nonetheless, thanks so much for the head's up, Chris. I blocked him, and I presume every other eBayer reading this thread has done so as well.

Ebay search isn't case sensitive. Musta just copied and pasted a wrongly spelled name.

Not so, same thing happened when I first tried to block him; came back invalid ID. Changed all to lower case and it worked.

Must be in the blocked bidder section you can't use lower case. I can search for him all day long using upper and lower case and he comes up fine. No biggie.

This situation just gets sillier. We left the crook a negative feedback, and so he replies in kind with one. We obviously don't deserve one for him sending us a fake check, so I emailed eBay a second time about what happened and asked to have the negative he left us removed from our rating. eBay acutally did it...but they also removed the feedback we left for the other guy, AND they removed all the negative feedbacks the other sellers left him, too. That means the guy is STILL on eBay, and has a 100% positive rating! ARGH!

Unfrigginbelievable! I think any court would deem eBay liable after that type of deliberate and negligent action.

Absolutely incredible. Ebay won't remove feedback that is left to destroy a seller, but they will remove honest feedback left on a criminal who is defrauding sellers of thousands of dollars in merchandise.

had to be a highjacked account for ebay to totally erase the negs and allow him to continue on...

I read in the paper this morning about an Ebay scammer using phony cashier's checks totalling a little over 8,000.00 and I went and looked up this thread, cause I was curious if it was the same people. If you look at Apostleoflight's feedback now, the negative feedback about the phony cashier's checks has been removed. Anyone know what the deal is?

I think someone nailed it in an earlier reply. I think this is a hijacked user name. If you look at this person's feedback, you will notice that it has been since October since any bids were placed by this person. Now, all of a sudden, bids are being placed like crazy on high priced items. I think it is a hijacked account.

Ouch, "Anitacoin" found out the hard way to the tune of $12,999 and "ramram" got it for $9,900. There are more negs to follow I'm sure. I appreciate the warning, blocked him as soon as I saw the thread.

Russ, those are new negs. The two that were removed are still removed. So he has burned four sellers with bogus checks.

It is a highjacked account. And the reason it has not been closed ought to be obvious. This person is going to go to jail. Big time. And to do this they will take their time and get all the goods on him. Even if it means that some people will get bogus checks for a few more auctions. Block this bidder and let this be. Stay out of it. The Feds are on this guy and they want him in person. They will get him. image

Sorry to say, but Feds don't get involved below $100k. Locals maybe at $50k.

Title 18 offense. FBI territory. Amount doesn't matter. Federal complaint before a magistrate/local FBI office. SAIC at locale of complaint would definitely be very interested. BTW, Frank Abignale still active in assisting FBI. His original offense? $60.00. Myth that it has to be $100,000.00. This figure actually started as a seperation of responsibility dispute between Treasury agents and Postal inspectors. FBI was never part of this.

What surprises me is that he hasn't picked up more negs yet. Only two in the past 5 days.
