Whats in a "VAM"?

Can someone help me out on this. I recently bought an 1887 S Morgan. Its a very pretty coin and I would have bought it even without the ad that goes as follows "TOP VAM 100" and "VAM 2"

What does these terms mean. The coin also has a "re-punched" mint mark

VAM is an acronym for Van Allen Mallis, the authors of numerous books describing the die varieties of Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars. The book is expensive, but if you can get one, check that VAM number as it most likely is the RPM you describe. Hope that helps!

VAM is a variety designation and refers, (I believe), to the initials of the authors of the book. Top 100 means it's one of the more desired varieties. Specifically what a VAM-2 is, I don't know.

There are people here that can direct you to web sites and books on vams . VAM is a die varity in my understanding.

1887-S VAM 2 is the S/S repunched mint mark; a Top 100 coin, but not at all difficult to locate.
    When in doubt, don't.

VAM: Every Morgan (and Peace) dollar has a VAM number, which is the variety. Some variety's are very scarce and/or popular so they went into the Top100 list. Not to confuse you but there's a second list called the "Hot 50". As Dennis said, this is somewhat available and does not bring a large premium over common prices.

    More information here:

    Top 100, Hot 50, etc
