Collecting Platinum Eagles ?

Is anyone trying to put together a set of platinum Eagles?
What denominations do you like?
Are there some harder to find than others?
Have they been holding in value as the metals go down?
Got pics?

Actually, Registrycoin from our boards just Registered the top $100 MS Platinum Eagle set. The mintages on these coins might surprise you. For example, by 2003, with the rising price of platinum the mint produced just 7,500 coins - creating an extrmeley low mintage modern coin. There are also several proof issues with mintages under 10,000 coins.

I am doing the 1/4 ounce proofs in original packaging only. So far I have 3 of them. 98,99 & 03.

The registry sets are very nice and the top set boasts 3 out of the eight coins as MS 70.It seems in the earlier years very few coins made the MS 70 grade as the 69’s seem to be top pop. I think it is interesting how the proofs all sported different reverses like commen’s. One other thing that is generally not seen is that it appears that as the denomination went down the mintages also went down which is just the reverse of the way things usually work. So there were less half ounce $50.00 pieces minted than one ounce $100 pieces.

Bill ,do the proof quarter ounces also have different reverses? My Redbook only shows the reverse of the one ounce.

Yes all the Proof platinum Eagles reverses change regardless of it's denomination. It is only the MS bullion versions that all of them have the same reverse as 1997.

Bill and Puff, thanks for the posts, I also am thinking about getting started on some of these. I also noticed that the Redbook does not have all the mintages listed, do you guys have a hint on where to find these.
Were all the coins minted sold? I don't suppose that some got melted and reminted?

Thanks for the headsup on the MS70, however, like I said before I am collecting the proofs in original packaging and a slabbed bullion does me no good.

As for mintage I believe some of the proofs stopped selling before their allowed mintages were reached. I don't know the exact numbers.

Hey Bill sorry for the error on what you were collecting

I pulled the pop reports and the MS 70's seem very hard to come by, there are a few dates that are exceptions but in general very tough.

I see that most of the registries in both the $100 and $50 coin have but a very few of the Ms 70’s
These must be very hard to locate? Why is that, do you have any comments on the strikes and grading for this series?

My wife and I were buying 1/10 and 1/2 oz platinums from the mint each year. I just bought a new house a couple of months ago. Platinum was way up, so I sold the first six 1/2 oz's, but kept the best date, 2003. Platinum was at $910 an oz at the time. It's dropped off over $100 an oz from that price since then. Of coarse, if I tried to get my money out of that furnature I bought, the % would be a much more dramatic hit. It's really uncomfortable sitting on platinum coins, though.

I still have a complete set of the 1/10 oz'ers.

Can you tell us what the issue mint price was of the half ounce and tenth of an ounce in the last few years?

Goldsaint. The larger denominations mean very large coins. Finding a perfect 70 is very difficult due simply to the size of the coin/fields.
Also, I believe that the handling of the ms coins by the mint. as compared to the handling of the pfs, is vastly different, making the ms coins in perfect condition very tough to locate.

Thanks for the post. If you don’t mind me asking can you give us a percent of increase that the MS 70”s run over the MS 69’s?
I also noticed in reading some of the mint site info. that Bill posted that only authorized dealers or representatives are allowed to buy the Business strikes via prior order. Is the mint still doing that?

Yes only certain people can buy bullion directly from the mint. You have to meet some pretty hefty criteria too.

Now here is a very strange auction on a Pr70 half ounce on ebay. This coin is obviously a DCAM but the DCAM was left off of the slab. If you run it through PCGS, it also does not say DCAM, the seller to his credit does make that clear in a statement just above the coin pics.So if you are working on a registry set and bought this then what? One of you computer whizzes might put in a link to this.

You know how every once in awhile an informational thread is posted that really gets your attention? This is how this thread hit me, and I decided that I would like to start working on a set of the Platinum coins. I choose the $50 coin just due to price, and my first coins are at the bottom, MS 69,s and PR 69’s, I have not decided whether to take the plunge and try for some 70’s as the coins I have looked at are 6 times more money to buy for that one point. The prices of the 69’s are very close to melt, but the 70 coins make me very nervous as the posters here discussed, many of the coins have never been sent for grading and are in hoards held by investors. This situation makes for a very dangerous investment in my humble opinion. One other fact that I might pass on for those that have not looked at this area is that only the PCGS 70 coins are very pricey. NGC 70 coins are priced close to spot like the 69 coins. In fact I watched a $50 2004 NGC MS 70 go off for $471.00 just a few days ago on Ebay.
Again thanks to Bill, Wondercoin, Puff, dpoole, Reg.Coin and everyone else that provided such great info. for this thread.
